The designer, Elizabeth Morrison, told me that one knit round in the contrast color should have come before the two purl rounds. The result of the omission is that an extra stripe in the main color comes to the right side within what should have been a solid contrast color band. It happens to look good anyway, except for one discontinuity where the rounds end. It's hardly noticeable, and since the hat has no particular front, the flaw can be worn toward the back.
