Knit soakers!!

Hi all, The knit soakers I am doing are for my first grandchild due the end of Nov. :>) yeah !!! no old grandma jokes :>( Soakers = wool pants to put over cloth diapers to soak up wet. I have started two pair 100% wool that my daughter got , to get a small size but trying to get the waist not to small or too big, one I crocheted a row of double cro. then ran a drawstring through that. Tried k2p2 rib on the other for a few rows but the cast off was a bit tight, not stretchy . so now I'm thinking of knitting the top with elastic thread held with the yarn ,never done that before so we will see. any thing you can think of please let me know Thanks Jenny

I think Elizabeth Zimmermann had a pattern for soakers in one of her books. Knitter's Almanac? Woolen tights to go over diapers, anyway.

In the 1940s people knitted 'long' wool stockings (about 6 inches long) that were safety-pinned to the diapers for winter babywear.

Hee Jenny Happy expectations !!! knitted soakers ??? i thought they were out of fashion with all those `pumpers` etc??? Today i am rather busy , outside the house , but later i will look up old 'Ariadne` , it is sure there ,, If i remember well , those had buttons on the crotch or the sides [like a triangualr folded diaper. mirjam
