If you are in the states..........Lots of states are also doing the "Operation Shoebox" You can google for your state. I am sure you can donate to this organization as well. I know that hats would be appreciated and there are usually local donation areas so you wouldn't have to go far to drop off your items.

I think they are an alternative to plastic diaper (?nappy) covers.

Thanks Gorgia. So, first you put on a nappy and then this soaker?

Sounds odd to me but what do I know:))

Welcome aboard, Jenny. As to what size and colors: Nothing that is not dark. They need sox, hats and mittens. Our knitting guild has sent many and though not all our soldiers are IN Iraq, we still send as if they were. Black, dark green, navy blue and so on.

Ophelia , this was the Old time way to dress babies over the nappy [not a paper one , but a real cloth one , with a rather thick knitted panty with Buttons underneath ,,,, it SOAKED some of the wetness,,, mirjam [mine still had those ]

Very clear Ophelia,,,, The cloth was folded in three lenght wise you put the short end under the baby boy`s buttom or over the baby girl`s front than you spread the other side of the Nappy folded it over the boy`s front to his back or girl`s back to her front crossed both corner over and tucked it in at the sides , some people put safety pins The soaker panties were tha pulled down , the buttoms on the under side were closed Voila Dry and smiling baby .. mirjam ,, who folded Mountains of Nappies ...

(Picture-)Google is your friend! There are many words and "names" I cannot understand, and I often do "picture-googles". This time I found a site with Vintage soakers! Knitted and crocheted! Aren't they sweet?? here is the pattern!

Oh heavens:)) Thank you Mirjam I know very well how to put on a nappy:)) I had three babies in my time (two boys and one girl) and I used only terry cotton nappies:))

Hmmmm I think I am having a stupid day:( I still don't understand the soaker.. unless that goes inside the nappy? Or is it use outside the nappy instead of a plastic pants to keep the fluid in?

Or maybe I have misunderstood the whole thing

O going to put her head in a bucket:)

I never used them but I remember that my baby dolls had them when I was a child. I suspect my mother used them on me, as she knit them for my dolls. I used cloth diapers on my kids but not soakers. (Of course, with DD in the 60's, the disposables were really not very good anyway. They have gotten better.)

That is -- she was a baby in the 60's. When I re-read the post it sounded like she was in her sixties in age - I am old, but not that old. (DD is 43)

Jenny,

I am hoping to use cloth diapers too - do you mind telling me where you found the soaker pattern? I know that there tons out there on the web but if you can point me in the direction of one that your DD has used and you know works, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
