New here

Hi Everyone My name is Andrea, I am new here. Was wondering if anybody uses knitting boards or round looms?

Not me -- but welcome to the list. I am a long time knitter and a beginner at crochet. You are likely to find someone who does almost any type of yarn related crafts here, though.

Welcome, Andrea. I don't yet, but I hope to. DH was going to make me a loom, but hasn't gotten around to it yet.

Hi Andrea! Welcome to RCTY. I don't use a loom either, I just wanted to welcome you here. :o)

I'm pretty sure I saw this topic a while back, so hopefully someone else works with a loom.

Hi Andrea,

Sorry, I don't use them either, but I do want to say welcome to the greatest group on the web. If you do a search of our group and put knitting boards or looms I think you'll find the ones that Gemini mentioned. I know some of the gals were buying the round looms that come in different sizes.

HTH,

Nora

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone. I have read some of the posts and everyone is so friendly and it is like a family here. I hope to make something and be able to show you all sometime soon. Andrea

Patterns are easy to find. It's just like doing knitting on two needles. You knit back and forth and take in by knitting 2 together, and so on, to shape the pieces. Or if you want a piece that is the same size around as the loom itself, just knit around and around. You can use all the techniques of needle knitting.

Then after you bind them off, you sew the pieces together. There are tutorials on the net about everything, so I'm sure there's one on how to make mattress-stitch seams and how to Kitchener stitch (graft or weave) 'live' stitches together. Practically every knitting book printed has those instructions, too, but some people find that a video tutorial helps them more.

To find flat patterns, just look for things like "two-needle socks" or "two-needle mittens".

I believe there is also a knitting loom group on Yahoogroups. Some amazing work has been done on knitting looms.

Well I was hoping to make a blanket or an afgan and was wondering the best way to go about joining it together. Andrea

Whatever way works for you. Some people use mattress stitch, some people use a crochet slip-stitch. Sometimes people will knit a garter stitch edge all around a square when they are making it, so they can mattress-stitch and kitchener stitch the edges for an almost invisible seam. Others choose to use a contrasting color to fasten squares together and make it a design element.

Elizabeth Zimmermann made one for which every square was knitted out from the center and all the edges were kitchener stitched invisibly together, but that's kind of advanced. Someday I might try it :-)

Hi Andrea I've been away from the group for a few days (a week?) so missed your original post. Welcome!
