Of all the nerve

I'm not a lurker, I didn't even know about you until I posted a question over at rctq (quilting). Desperation for a recommendation prompts me to just climb in here and ask a favor. I stitch wee little preemie caps to give to a neonatal hospital located in the Katrina area. The yarn I love - Patton's Beehive Baby is no longer available. Preemies lose much of their body heat through their tiny heads and need to wear the caps. Anything I give them has to be hospital and 'Daddy helped with the wash' sturdy, and needs to be light as a whisper. Would any of you be kind enough to recommend an excellent yarn brand for me? I see lots of them on the net but seriously need the benefit of your experience. Ordering something that sounds good at their sites could be such a costly error in time and $s. If I was supposed to introduce myself - I'm a great-grandmother, live in The Swamp on the Mississippi/Alabama line (if they ever find the line again), have one rotten Yorkie and am enjoying the time I've been given to stitch for little angels. I really do need your help and profoundly appreciate it. Polly Esther

In the meantime Yarnforward has their remaining white Paton's Behive Baby on sale

Thank you, Judy. But all they have is 'crystal' white - I suspect a metallic sort of sparkly sort - and I need something equal in quality but in pink, baby blue, mint, Christmas red. What I'm searching for is an equally fine grade that won't take a 2nd mortgage to pay for. We welcome lurkers, newcomers and questions over at rctq too, and I thank you for your welcome. We're right grumpy about spam so I understand your 'not affiliated' ending. I would love to be affiliated but so far, nobody's thought me worth bribing. Polly

Hi Polly

Me, I lurk at rctq! :)

I've made preemie caps out of very soft acrylic (Bernat Satin, mostly) and the hospital has asked for acrylic in the past, too. But I live on the Canadian North Atlantic coast, so heat is not always an issue :)

I have some of the Beehive Baby; it's a great cotton yarn. As for a replacement, I've got some mercerized cotton that's from overseas, so is probably not an option. I think that Bernat Cottontots would work, but could be too heavy, depending on how light you want them. There's also a TLC Cotton Plus cotton blend that might suit you:

One of my Ozzy friends tells me that Patton's crystal is pure snow white. That ought keep us going for a while but I'm still hoping someone here will recommend a brand that's grand for the 3 pound little guys. Polly

Hi Polly: I am currently knitting some things for an expected grandbaby using Caron "Simply Soft" and Lion Brand "Baby Soft". I found that with both brands I had to go to the store and actually feel the yarn, as some colors are much softer than others - presumably because of the dyes. There were some shades which I wouldn't dream of using on a new baby, and others which feel very soft.

Polly Esther,

(Simply *Love* your name), I can't really help either, and I hope you find the yarn you need. I just wanted to say hello to one southern gal from another.

The name comes from one of those awful games you're forced to play at a baby shower, Name the Baby. Polly Esther was the worst one I could think of. It still makes me smile. Polly

Hi Polly,

First, welcome to the group and I hope you come back and let us know what kind of yarn you finally used. Now, for the baby sets that I've made I used Red Heart baby sport yarn, it's very soft and comes in baby colors.

Love the name, love your sense of humor! You will fit in very nicely in the RCTY family! :o) I'm sorry I can't help you other than to suggest that you just feel the yarn before you buy it. As Mirjam said... bless you for the work you are doing for these precious babies.

BeehiveWool.com is replacing Paton's Beehive Baby with Bernat Baby 3 Ply which they say is an identical yarn. They sell it for $2.75 USD -- Here are the specs. Solids: =B7 100% Acrylic =B7 50 gr/1.75 oz =B7 262 m/286 yds Sparkle: =B7 85% Acrylic/15% Acetate =B7 42.5 gr/1.5 oz =B7 187 m/205 yds =B7 Needles: 3.25 mm (US 3) =B7 Tension: 32sts =3D 10 cm (4") =B7 Machine wash & dry (Beehive Wool Shop is in Victoria, BC - I have been there but mostly have visited online. I have a little trouble with their site looking quite right but have sometimes found yarn I needed that I didn't find elsewhere.) Judy

Bernat Softee Baby is what I use for the baby items that I make. I like the feel and easy care. Carol in TN

ROTFL Somehow I don't think my actual dogs would like to have a swamp critter to play with... nor would they like to become its lunch. I wouldn't like that too much either, thank you. So you can keep your alligators, and I will keep my doggies. ;o)

I repeat what I said before though.... I LOVE your sense of humor!! You definitely fit into this group! ;o)

Gem, Pardon my butting in here, but I lurk over at rctq, so I know of Polly. She has a wonderful sense of humor! But don't dismiss her alligators too quickly; on occasion, they do offer to take care of door-to-door salemen, or any other annoyances you'd like to send down to them. ;-)
