Pattern Suggestions please

I'm bored at work again, no baby blankets on the horizon, and I have lots of scraps. Flipping through my Vanna White book I saw what I thought would be cool, an apple shaped pillow. Figured I could make one for each of my kids teaches for Christmas. But it calls for holding 4 strands at a time! Not only hurts me to work with, but it was very stiff, not a pillow I would have wanted to use. So I dropped to 2 strands, and that shrunk an already small (about 7" wide) pillow even smaller, I wanted at least 12". So I thought I'd google for an apple pattern I could convert to a pillow, no luck yet. But besides that, I was curious if I could get a woman's, maybe even current/former school teacher, perspective on this or other little things I could make for the teachers? I'm a practical type person, I don't like to give something that doesn't have a purpose, my wife learned me well :) So maybe instead of, or in addition to the pillows, I could make bookmarks (from std. 4ply?) or ???

Thanks for any suggestions or links

Standard 4-ply - assuming that's US worsted-weight, I think it's too thick for a bookmark. Sport weight could make a nice one, or sock weight, or lace weight. Make it lacy and starch it stiff or put it inside one of those clear bookmark holders I've seen punched-parchment bookmarks in.

The little apple-shaped pillow could be a large pincushion. Then the firmness would not be a problem, it would be an advantage.

Small, thick, stiff coasters (not stuffed) can be useful too.

Could you try the pillow with bigger needles, or would that hurt too?

Already using biggest I have on hand, 'N' 9.00mm

I could try coasters, I think I recall seeing patterns for some of those, in apples alone there's whole apples and sliced open (ie white guts).

Yes, 99% of my yarn scraps are US WW 4ply, so a bookmark is probably out.

Thanks Bryan

Hi Bryan,

Could you use two strands with and N hook, chain for 12 inches and go from there. I'm making afghans using that way and none of them have been stiff at all.
