I lost the thread, so am just coming right out and asking... since you were talking about it:
What IS the correct pronunciation of Vincent VanGogh?
phonetically, I say: van-goe.
Thanks in advance! Hugs, Noreen

Noreen,
I don't think an American can make the correct sound, but it's something like van goff. I think there's some gutteral sound in the off.
Hesira
Who, as he requested just calls him Vincent.

:D I like Vincent better, hard to mispronounce that, UNLESS one puts an Italian swing on it and says: Vincente` (vin-cent-ay) LOL! Hugs, Noreen
Well If he made a mess of his paints it would indeed be gooey.....LOL
Growl the first G in the back of your throat, say the short O sound and growl again. The first and last G have the same sound. van Gogh. The van has an a sound like in apple. Not the Van sound as in the car or van. I am van Dam both with the apple sound. But hey, who is talking I mispronounce so many words, and have given up trying to say the tongue twister long ago. I often work my way around words like that until someone will say the word for me. LOL Oh yah, van is always with a small v. van Gogh would be filed under the G, not the v At least that is the Dutch way of filing...Can you imagine my mixups when I had to file for the library, or when I had to do cataloguing....Ha, ha...

Hi Els, Thanks for the lesson. BTW, van-goe wasn't van-gooey, it was GO like stop and go. Hugs, Noreen
So it kind of sounds like you are saying "gog" while you're goggling?
LOL
Hesira
Oh, doink! I meant "gargling"
Hesira
That's why he signed his paintings "Vincent" rather than van Gogh. He knew folks like us would have a hard time pronouncing his last name.
Hesira
Newsanchors have been using "hohh" in here lately...
Johanna
You spun a FINE yarn hesira,
LOL! Now... in my feeble mind, I'm pronouncing Hesira (phonetically) as Hes-EAR-uh. Am I close? And, for inquiring minds, Noreen is accented on the een not the nor... nehr-EEN (ehr being like the schwaa sound, if you learned phonics) Hugs, Noreen known to her niece as no-weenie. SPLORT!

something like that indeed. It is a gutteral sound. We have lots of those in Dutch..LOL
