Stitch Book Recommendations

You can buy the Walker treasuries with confidence and with no regrets. The Harmony guides are excellent resources if you can find them cheaply; plan to have them spiral bound at the office place, however, because the bindings really suck. If you're into colorwork pick up a copy of "1000 knitting stitch patterns", which is a small-format ring-bound book containing (gee,) a thousand colorwork patterns.

There are others, of course...

But do check whether you like the idea of charts vs written out knitting directions. The first one or two were written out, then she switched to charts.

IMO there isn't a book that comes close to the Walker Treasuries! If you have those books, you have it all!!!! and they have quite alot of info too! I wouldn't be without them! Maggie

Welcome, Rose. I like tha Harmony Guide, and the Knitter's Book of Handy Patterns is another good one.

Oh, and most of us are obsessed with our craft(s)!

Good point. I can work with either, but for portability I tend to chart her written patterns.

Welcome and I'll add one here, it's the Readers Digest Ultimate Sourcebook of Knitting and Crochet Stitches. That way if you get hooked on knitting you can also learn to crochet.

I've ordered Barbara Walker's Second Treasury of Knitting Stitches and can't wait to see it! I did my research on all 4 volumes and it seems this second volume had the largest number of stitch patterns collected.

Incidentally, Vogue Knitting has a "Stitchionary" coming out this Fall. This will be on my "wishlist", as well as Nora's Reader's Digest suggestion, since I wish to crochet as well. This weekend I will meet with my mother, who will show me some of her crochet stitches.

I found a wonderful aid to those of you who have all the Walker Treasuries (well, the first 3 books).... I found this link to a spreadsheet online. A knitter compiled a list of all the stitches and gauge info. Please understand I am a complete newbie and probably not using the right terms yet. If you are handy with spreadsheet programs, you can organize these stitches by multiples, additional stitches, and row multiples.

For everyone else, there is a text file. Please note that the format by which it downloads is .zip, and needs to be extracted first. A program like WinZip will be necessary in order to do this.... (I can't help with printing or emailing since the author expresses we do not do this, but you could try to contact her with any quesitons)

Aid to Barbara Walker's Stitch Pattern Books

Thanks so much again to everyone for their help!! I have Walker's Second Treasury now and slowly practicing my "swatches". Of course, they all start out crooked but somewhere in the middle I regain some semblance of order...I'm having fun and find it wonderfully relaxing. So far I have swatched the garter-slip stitch, seed stitch and basketweave stitch.
