Teddies for Tragedies

We have started a group in our community knitting "Teddies for Tragedies" Three of us made 100 teddies which are now on their way to Haiti with "Healing Hands for Haiti " A group of Doctors and health workers are on their way down for a few weeks this month. The children there from come to the clinic for health care and these children will get a teddy to take home with them to cuddle. Doctors who treat children in the third world found that the teddies were sometimes as important to healing, as the medicines, and of course each child gets to keep the teddy, so a continual supply is needed. Since our story was published in the local paper..we have had many ladies offer to knit teddies, donate yarn and stuffing and our volunteers are growing by leaps and bounds. When I started knitting Teddies I had no idea what I was going to do with them..only that they would go to a needy child somewhere in the third world. What a blessing it has been to do something that I enjoy by knitting and making some child happy. What a wonderful cause. My website is

Nice thought. However, Teddies for AMERICAN Katrina victims would be 'better' imho.... Noreen

Congratulations on your "Teddies for Tragedies" program. I wish you well in your endeavours, and I hope it catches on all over the world. It is a very sweet and thoughtful thing you are doing. Be proud! *hug*

Personally I think Teddies for ALL children *everywhere* is the best idea! Where there are little children in need of something of their own to cuddle due to medical reasons, poverty, comfort from the wars around them, or whatever.... that's where they are needed... be it in Haiti, America, Africa, China, the UK, Canada, or wherever.

I agree - kids are kids no matter where they live. I simply look for an reputable group and a relatively easy way to get the items to them. I really don't care about nationality.

Haiti is not totally voodou-based. There are an awful lot of Christians there, too.

Religion should have nothing to do with whether or not we help children in need. I find when religion enters the picture - there is trouble. Look at all the rioting going on right now because of the publication of the cartoon in the Danish newspaper. I'm really glad to read of the level-headed Muslims calling for calm and reason. The whole thing is just a mess - it's a huge culture clash, with a small group using their religion as an excuse to riot. (I'll get off my soapbox now)

Geez, I didn't mean to turn this into anything, just stated mho, which others here do quite regularly without getting raked over the coals. Religion has nothing TO do with it, I don't LIKE Haiti, period, OK? Noreen

Sorry if I sounded harsh - there is plenty of need out there for everyone to make their own choices about where to send things. I tend to have left over wool - which foreign charities like and some US ones don't (several ask for things to be machine washable) So I tend to make hats for Afghans for Afghans as there is an easy process and the kids need the hats. I don't have a problem with other projects - this one just fits for me.

I understand where you are coming from. There are a lot of needy children all over the world and maybe we should think about the children closer to home first.

This group was asking for knit teddies from here and I decided that there were children around me that could use that type of toy just as much so did some toys for my area instead.

I am probably wrong in saying this but what about our own country first as there are people we don't see there.

Yep, Catholics, Protestants, Islamic; and I'm pretty sure the official religion of Haiti is still Roman Catholic.

Wooooweee! Just because you don't like Haiti, we cannot comfort children by sending teddy bears? Well, that is a good christian attitude!!!!

I agree with you, Darlene! While we have to think globally, we have to act locally. I will be most likely to use the pattern and knit for children here in our community. (Hospital, Women's Community House, .....) The idea is great, and the pattern is simple.

Thank you nbjess!

When I feel up to knitting I will be making some for local charities too. If I had the money for postage though, I would happily send some off to the little ones all over the world.

Michaela (pretty name), I don't remember seeing you here before (watch.. I've already welcomed you and just forgot)... so welcome to RCTY. :o)

Are you serious about this...The YarnWright..you mean those children have no access to store bought toys...I would be more than happy to send teddies down there.. Tell me who to contact

Do the little children dedicate themselves to the Devil? Maybe a little bit of God's Love would change their way of thinking !
