I apologize if you thought I was rude! I only pointed out that it was automatic and that I was lazy. Noreen

Oh dear. Get well soon, and don't strain the arm before time.

I've read that comfrey can speed bone healing but I don't know how it would be applied. Enjoy your reading. (Maybe you can learn to read the newsgroup by tapping the space bar with your toes?)

Do you have any tips for producing lace? I had a slow morning and tried making lace. I had sts dropping and the L carriage jammed a couple of times. I checked tension and how the yarn was feeding. I finally changed yarns. Re-oiled the machine and L carriage, paying specific attention to where I saw the thing jam by using a Q-tip to oil parts the rag couldn't reach. Checked for bent needles on the bed and made sure there was no fuzz in the brushes on the L carriage. I have a new sponge bar withhin the last year, but moved it a little bit to get fresh sponge on the needles, and I still have problems. I slowed down moving the L carriage, added the fine knitting bar to the bed that came with my ribber, and finally tried a different lace pattern, and still couldn't get it to reliably produce lace.

FWIW, I then looked through my Stitchworld book and picked an open tuck st pattern that I thought looked nice, threaded up again the King Cole 4-ply Angora Look I had in the stash, and it knit up beautifully in open tuck, while it had failed in lace. I also tried 100% wool

4-ply, lace weight Crystal Palace Kid Merino, and Yeoman Panama cotton/acrylic mix, all of which failed to produce lace. I tried more claw weights on the work, then less weight, and nada.

Do you think I may need a new L carriage? Mine doesn't look damaged to me, but it's always the carriage that jams or produces dropped sts. I posted to the mach knit group, but no one seems to be posting over there anymore.

TIA for any tips you can give me.

P.S. I do have a cone of cream colored #10 cotton thread in my stash that I know knits on the Brother. I'm wondering if it might work for lace, since it's smoother and heavier than the CP, but lighter than the 4-ply.

Thank you for the compliments, Marie. The hat pattern is free and is available here:

It was a quick and easy knit without being boring. I've gotten lots of compliments on it on the playground and it has opened a few nice discussions with other knitting moms. The best part is it is a little stretchy so easy for my 20 month old to put on herself. Hopefully it will fit her next year too (if it doesn't get lost before then!).LauraJ

Hi Leah,

I'm no expert I'm afraid, I drag my mach> Do you think I may need a new L carriage?

It might be worth having it checked (if you can find someone who still services machines, they are a "dead" item in my part of the world).

Sorry I can't be of help, VP

I finished a Liesel scarf, and that's all. I worked on the durned Pomatomus socks for a chunk of October and the 1st one was killing me. I finally finished the second one last week, and am not too happy. They are really loose fitting and bag a lot. I'd give them to someone with wider calves, but my foot is really short, so I don't know if they'd fit that way. Bleh!

Hi VP,

Thanks for letting me know I covered everything you would, though.

I did finally figure out the problem late yesterday afternoon. I slowly went over the machine step by step as I threaded it up again and knit some lace rows. It turns out I had a loose screw on the front loop of the tension mast, which only occasionally caused uneven tension, which caused slightly bigger loops to form at the beginning of some LHS rows, which jammed the lace carriage! Since I had to cut the work off to free up the carriage, I couldn't tell what was causing the jams since the loops weren't that big. I tightened the screw and manually pulled up the yarn on the LHS rows, where the mast had issues with the thin CP yarn, and I was able to use it with the carriage on the fine lace setting and the fine knitting bar. I have not tried the thicker yarn again to see if the mast still causes occasional loose LHS rows. So it was the tension mast after all. I have a Bond hobby machine, in which you have to pull up the yarn every row, so it's not a hardship to remember to do it on the Brother, though it does slow down the work quite a bit.

I finished a pair of socks and a scarf plus a sock bookmark. Not much, but I think that it was more than I will get done in November.
