What's your opinion?

Ok. I have hand washed DH's new socks so many times, that I am ready to throw them in the washer. They are 100% merino wool and I know that felting is a potential problem. Here's the deal: I have a front loading washer that is very gentle on clothes. I've looked around on the net and found varying opinions about whether FL washers are good felters. I was thinking I'd give them a try on the gentle cycle with cold water and dry flat. Am I asking for trouble, or perhaps a pair of house socks for myself (extra thick)?

We have a FL washer with a woolen cycle and I use it all the time with very good results. The dryer is a different matter, although I hear that some of us use a few minutes in the dryer to "tighten up" a sagging sweater.

I'd put them in on a gentle cycle, and avoid the dryer.
