What would YOU do?

A few months ago, my mother told me of a lady who comes to their complex as a vendor, apparently, she makes wooden knitting needles. Mother asked if I'd want any. I explicitely stated that it would depend on price, type of wood, and that I'd want DPN's. A few weeks later, mother stated that the lady hadn't come around as of late. No problem. Next thing I knew, a few weeks ago, in my mailbox is something from my mother. (day before USA Mother's Day, in fact). In there, were two sets of Clover Bamboo STRAIGHT needles. The note said she'd hoped I'd like bamboo, over wood. Here's the thing. I DID thank her. Said I liked them. She got the sizes RIGHT, they're US 1 and 2's, but they are straights, not DPN's. Even if I trimmed them to MAKE DPN's, I'd only get four, I use five. So, do I keep these around? Do I make sets of 4 DPN's? Or do I de-stash them and get what I want? Here's the SAD part, I DID graciously thank my mother. After all, she is almost 79 years old, and at least thought of me. What you'd have to know, behind the scenes is that EVERY gift I've tried to give HER for the past 25 years has gotten complaints, immediately, upon reciept! What would YOU do? TIA, Noreen

who is leaning towards de-stash and getting the DPN's she wants, and just not saying a word to mother.

Hi Noreen

I would keep them long enough to have them in view on her next visit and then follow Wooly's advice....

Noreen,

there's no such thing as good or bad choices, there's simply 'what happens when you do what, and what do you learn from the results of making those choices and actions?" It makes life a f*** of a lot more refreshing!!

David who's made choices which drastically altered his physical health which in turn led to making different choices which led to very enriching life experiences :)

Good points, David, thank you! ;) Hugs, Noreen

Noreen if my mother gave that to me, I would keep them, no strings attached and enjoy them when I can, knitting needles are a small item to store. I would start to worry if she would give me something big, like a Llama or Alpaca or even a sheep. that would be a problem.

Family relationships are like a big ball of sticky spaghetti, it taste yummy with a bit of spicy spaghetti sauce, but the ball itself is very hard to untangle...LOL keep on smiling and think happy thoughts

Wat to go, even when it is not always an easy route

Noreen, I'm not trying to suggest what you should do, but if it were me, I'd keep them. I would give anything if Mom were here to give something to me, or for me to give it to her. I have things that Mom gave me over the years, that at the time I wasn't so sure I wanted but now I treasure. Perhaps one day you will look back and be glad that you did too. Of course, my relationship with my Mom wasn't the same as you and yours, so that's why I'm not really making any suggestions, just an observation.

Els, it's a thought I'll keep in mind. My mother and I have a quite stormy relationship, and, even if she never appreciates anything I give her, I DO appreciate the small things she gives me... Thanks, Noreen

Actually, I'm not complaining, as I know it's a GIFT, which is more than she'll give me in reverse. She is unsatisfiable. And, as for giving TO her anymore, I'm stumped.... even gift cert's are frowned upon quote: "well, hells bells, you put a lot of thought into that, huh?"

makes one wonder WHAT would please her.

Noreen

I have learned that for the person who has everything , I give a spa coupon ... such as a massage or a manicure. That way I am thinking of them and it is not just a gift card. As for your needles , you said TY , enough is done. If you want to make them into hair sticks , dpns or cut them and make circs out of them , no one matters but what you want todo with them. Once a gift is given , it is not up to the giver on how it is used. Enjoy them the best way you can and if that means giving them away , do so ! Coggie

Noreen, I would keep them, and try to figure out a way to use them. As others have said, it is a gift, and it sounds as though she did try to give you something you would use. THe joys of relatives, eh?

Hi Noreen:

I'd do just that...de-stash and get what you want. Family can cause such havoc and stress sometimes. I can so relate, so now I tend to do what "I" want.

Then that is how SHE is, and she is too old to learn to be different! I think we have to see it that way! Don't let other's "bad" behaviour change us!

I have experienced things like that from persons in my life. And I try to be careful NOT doing the same, because I am see how BAD it is for the person, and I will NOT get "bad habits/ manners" like that.

You did the right thing thanking her, no matter how SHE had reacted the opposite way! Let her see the needles if she visit you, just keep them, that is no big deal! Later on, you can do what you like with them. AUD ;-)

Thanks, Norma! It's a rocky road, stormy, etc.... thing is, I do LOVE my mother, I just don't LIKE her! She has always DEMANDED "respect", however, she doesn't respect ME..... I *think* she did this because I mentioned wanting to get ahold of my cousin who has my favourite Aun'ts things (she was also my godmother, and really, a second mom)... and she had bamboo, rosewood, ebony, birch, etc DPN's and circs from the 1940's. Russell isn't going to use them.... Mitch isn't going to use them, and Renee, my "sister-cousin" doesn't want them.... Gosh I babble! Hugs, Noreen
