Gathered skirt for computer table

I want to sew a gathered skirt to attach to the front and sides of a table on which my computer will be placed, and the purpose of the skirt will be to hide things that I'd like to keep out of view in my bedroom. I am not an accomplished seamstress, and I will have to construct the skirt from scratch, as I don't have a pattern to guide me. I encountered a kind lady in the fabric department at Wal-Mart, and she suggested that I run cording in a pocket at the top of the skirt (much like a rod pocket in curtains) to form the gathers. I told her that I am terror-stricken at the thought of using a basting stitch and pulling the threads to form gathers. Her solution sounds viable, but I'd like to get other opinions. I'm also in a quandary about how to attach the skirt to the table, as the table is made from wood which has been laminated with veneers. I was thinking that I could use sticky Velcro and attach a strip to the sides and front of the table, and that idea came to a screeching halt when I read the instructions on the Velcro package, and the recommendation is not to use sticky Velcro on fabric. There are dots of Velcro which can be sewn on, and that would be fine for the skirt, but not for the table. The sticky Velcro would be great for the table. AAARRRGGHH! Any suggestions will be deeply appreciated.

Betty, Why not use the dots of Velcro on the skirt itself, and the sticky velcro strips on the table? Perhaps those strips could be cut into smaller squares to match the sizes of the dots? The skirt gathers themselves would hide the velcro strips, I would think. Just a thought.

Carey, I can't thank you enough. The oft-repeated phrase, "Why didn't I think of that?" is more than appropriate here.

Betty Said.......... "........I am terror-stricken at the thought of using a basting stitch and pulling the threads to form gathers........"

An easy way to gather something -- and in one step -- is to zig-zag OVER a piece of cotton string or heavy yarn. Just be careful not to catch the string in the edge of the stitches. Tie a knot in the beginning end of the string and straight pin it to the finished cut edge of your fabric so that it won't come loose as you hold the string while sewing. Once you have it sew the entire length of the piece of fabric, just pull on the string and -- VOILA -- instant gatheres -- and with no need to hem that edge or make a casing and thread the string through!! If you use the selvage edge of your fabric (assuming it doesn't have those ugly colot dots and woring along it) as the "top" that will be attached to your table, then you don't even have to hem it if you don't want. As for the velcro, be sure to put the dots fairly close together. The weight of the gathered fabric will make it sag where there is no support from the velcro. Actually, strips would be better

-- sewn to the fabric. You can sew the sticky back stuff to the fabric but it is a royal P.I.T.A. because the adhesive gums up your machine needle! Ask me how I know THAT little piece of trivia -- LOLOL! CiaoMeow >^;;^< PAX, Tia Mary

What a wonderful suggestion, Tia Mary, and I actually believe I can do it myself. Should I use ordinary string that one finds in a hardware store, or is there a string better suited for this purpose to be found elsewhere? Your continued guidance will be deeply appreciated.

I`ve used sticky velcro very successfully for attaching fabric arm caps to an otherwise sound leather armchair. As you can imagine, the darned things just wouldn`t stay on the slippery leather until I put the velcro on. I put a staple in at each end of the piece of velcro strip attached to the arm cap, but everything has stayed put for ages, on a chair in constant use.

Does this remind you of Victorian days, when they would make "skirts" for piano legs, for the sakeof decency? LOL! I`m glad that Betty said that it was to hide her files etc. - the idea of a computer with a skirt cracked me up!
