Daughter's skirt

She made it herself at all of 7 years. I got half a metre of 112cm wide material (she chose a purple cotton) and some elastic for all of $4 (Australian). We sewed one seam, making a tube, made a waist band and put the elastic in and did the hem at the bottom. This is the first time she has used the sewing machine but she only needed help with guiding the fabric. We had to put the foot pedal on a stool so she could reach it! The bit she loved best was when the bobbin ran out and we had to refill that.

It's not exactly haute couture, but it's her first attempt and she's as proud as punch. I'm so pleased that her first project was so much fun. Thanks to all for encouraging me to give it a go. We both can't wait to choose the next project.

I did my first garment at a similar age: gathered the skirt onto the waistband, put the zip in, and did the hem. No-one told me zips were difficult, so I just did it! Never looked back! More power to her foot pedal! :D

Congratulations to both of you, her for making the skirt and you, Dear Mom, for having the patience to help her. That is a wonderful experience for you both. May there be many more. Emily

Yahoo! She should be proud, and so should you! She's learning something she'll enjoy for a lifetime!

If I'd had a treadle I'd have been happy for her to try a while back. Thanks for all the good wishes. I'm so glad it's opened a new world for her - and me - yes my patience surprised me, but I was determined that her first attempt was going to be a good one to make her keen to try something else soon.
