My Finished Sampler

I added a picture in my RCTNP album of the little sampler I made for my sister and brother-in-law's 50th Anniversary. It was supposed to be an apple tree, but since they live in Arizona, I figured oranges were more appropriate.

Yes, I always wondered how it turned into an apple. I prefer to imagine some fruit that doesn't exist on Earth.

Alison the trees are described as the Tree of Life Etz HaChayim , and the tree of Knowing Good and Bad =3DEtz HaDa`at Tov VeRA.... For generations, It has been accepted as an allegory to sexual maturity . Maybe that`s what `added` an apple idea ,, but in fact the it has no name , it is described as a very nice fruit Seductive to the eye etc.... As to it not being on Earth ,, the Garden is deffinitely ON EARTH , at least 2 of the rivers mentined are flowing in Iraq ,,, The Prath & Chidekel By the way did you know that the Garden is called Gan Eden ,, the garden of Delight , pleasure . The translation Paradise , is related to the Hebrew Pardes=3DOrchard =3Dcitrus grove [and it is an allegory to divine knowledge] It came into Hebrew from Ancient Persian =3DPairi-daeza, and Acadeic =3D paradisu, Arameic =3D pardesa Greek recieve= d it as paradeisos and Arabic recieved it as Phirdavs] I agree with you we are entitled to think the fruit is something imaginative !!!! mirjam a year ago i made a fiberart work showing apples , NOT related to the garden of delight ,,,, mirjam

That would depend entirely which version of the bible you are reading! All versions are dubious at best.

I seem to remember having heard once that scholars think it may have been a pomegranate. Why that could be, I don't know!

Probably because pomegranates are native to Israel and appear in a lot of their art.

Perhaps because pomegranates pre-date apples ?

And figure in lots of myths and folklore. I think there is a fertility thing (as in wishing a woman to be) tied in too.

As a matter of interest, when Dorothy Sayers wrote "The Man Born to be King" for the BBC, she went back to the Greek version of the Bible. It might be interesting to know what word was used in Greek. Jim.

While parts of the New Testament were written in Greek, what Greek word was used for the fruit described in Genesis would still be a translation.

I have quoted to you Exactly what the HEBREW text writes ,, any Greek trnaslation is just a translation ,,, There was no Apple nore Pomegranate in the Gan-Eden =3DParadise ,,, An 'apple' =3D is mentioned in [the prophet ] Joel , [aleph=3D1, 12 ] as a tree destroyed by locust , And it appeares in the Song of Songs. mirjam mirjam
