Re: Knitting problem

Once upon a time, long ago, I seem to remember being told that at the

>end of each row, if you do a stitch the opposite of the other stitches >on that row, it made it less likely to curl. That is, if you are >knitting a row, purl the first and last stitch. If you are purling, do >a knit stitch on the first and last. Anybody else? Or am I >hallucinating again? > >Pat in Illinois

I didn't know that but think you could be right. I have just finished knitting a capelet that was very lacy, with a garter stitch hem and border up the front. So every row, either side started with six stitches of plain. That was what the pattern said, Slip first stitch purlwise, then continue to knit 5 and yes, the border lay nice and flat.

Yes, I remember doing that. It does help a little to keep things flatter, but sometimes, with some yarns, it's nearly impossible. When I did something like a scarf and found that was happening I either knit the fancy yarn together with something else that was a little heavier and stiffer or I made it wide enough to double and stitch one edge closed.

If you know how you could also crochet an edge and that would do the job.

Glad it is going well, don't use longer needles than you need to, it will always slow you down.

If you decide to knit socks, they have all sorts of superwash wools now which make the loveliest socks in the brightest, craziest wools. Socks are wonderful to knit because when you finish you only have the start thread and the end thread to weave in (there are other methods where you don't even have to do that but start smaller if you haven't tried socks yet) - they are really quite an engineering feat.

I loooove knitting socks, can't count how many pairs I have done. I have just finished and blocked a pair for my eldest SIL - brown, white and blue sock wool which works into a stripey pattern and because his feet are so large and I would not get a pair out of one ball, I did the heel and toe in a dark brown. They are quite striking. I will put the money I give him in the socks, I don't like just giving money so the socks tell him I cared enough to spend time and energy on him even if I haven't a clue what to give him lol I might get round to putting a pic up on rctn but there is another bridge Xmas party today so who knows ? Tough work being a GOW you know !

I am only knitting at the moment as I shall soon have cataracts fixed and knitting is easier to do than needlework when the sight is down, I am just remarking on that, please do not think I am whining.

I figure the same way, long distance is the least of the time. I hadn't thought of prescription sun glasses, but that's a good idea.

Got to do a good job of failing the eye test in January. If I do that, it should be done in February sometime I would think, the wait is not that long.
