Bed Runners??

I've been awol for quite a while. Disabilities get to be more bothersome t= he older I get. But, oh well... I've seen these cute rectangular blankets draped across the foot of beds. = But what are they used for? If I was going to do something like that I'd just make it a bit bigger and = have a lap robe. But that thing arcross the foot of the bed wouldn't do an= ything except add weight to my athritic toes. As it is, I kick off all my = blankets at the foot and have my toes sticking out all "naked." lol Anybody have a clue?

My dog always likes to lie (lay?) at the bottom of the bed to look out the window. She just loves the runner and knows I can wash it to make it smell good again. Better than washing a huge bedspread. And my grandson grabs his and wraps himself in it while playing his nintendo games and such while on the floor. Keeps him toasty and doesn't create a lot of bulk. I personally think they make great wraps (keep them handy on the back of the chair or sofa) while watching tv in cold climates.

I think the Hotels started the fad to make their rooms look more like home to patrons. I like the idea, it pulls the room together, and in summer you can just kick the runner off, or fold it onto a neighboring chair. Great for the QI's too.

Roberta - I've always been curious what you use for bed coverings in the summer. Aren't the down comforters way too warm for summer or do you just use a lighter version? Many times in the summer, I use only a sheet for my top cover.

Howdy!

I think the bed "runner" is a cheap solution to having a pretty blanket or quilt folded over the end of the bed. I blame the hotel/motel industry. They can get 4 or 5 runners out of a standard bedspread or topper. Things will remain extravagant on our beds, w/ a complete quilt folded over the bottom of the bed, useful and decorative.

R/Sandy - ... wouldn't one of those runners work as a shawl, too, ala Scarlett O'hara and her drapery dress? "oh, fiddle-dee-dee!"

One of the first dates with dh was to a museum in LA that had some of the GWTW costumes on display. That green drapery dress was there. There were other dresses there but that is the one I remember. : ) Taria

On cruise ships, they use something like this when guests are arriving. I assumed it was to place your suitcase on while unpacking. Then it disappears until the departure day! Maybe hotels have the same idea...it would protect their bedspreads.

Thank you to all who replied. I've gotten the impression that they really aren't used for anything other than adding color. That's OK, but I still think it's a waste of time. Ten more inches all around would make it a great lap robe. If you wanted to take a little nap, it would be right there to pull up over you, then easy to straighten out when you got up.

You had good ideas and how it would make your pets lives more splendid. Gotta consider our fur-babies, after all.

So, I I'm going to skip the bed runners and make doll clothes instead.

I'm always amazed at how this group swoops in and gives advice, instructions, and comfort, about all sorts of problems. Thanks again!
