NAME GAME COLOUR CHALLENGE.. [ON-topic] -- Trying again

Wow! that train derailed fast even for this newsgroup!

Just in case anyone missed it and would like to play, I've included my original post [before the digression into hills and vales and ladies with white flags and just where IS west?] below my signature line.

And, to whet your appetite, here's a quick "virtual" taste of some quilt blocks done in approximations of colours for my initials: can you guess which colours are used for K___ I____G_____?

Sorry about the derailment Kim! But it was a painless derailment :) and no deaths or injuries occurred.. :)

But, I still am in on the Name Game... have even picked out fabric, and will repeat my colours: Green Dirt Burgundy

Quick question: what color is heather? I thought it was pink, but a friend says she thinks it's sort of oatmeal color. Which of us is right?

According to Wikipedia it's a purple colour with a tint of pink and blue...that sounds about right to me. As for the colours of the actual flowers, here's from the Heather Society [can't get more official than that, can you?]

Heather comes in LOTS of different colours. The leaves and stems are always green, but the flowers predominate for several months of the year, and they can be white, yellow, blue, pink or purple. We have about six different colours in the front garden. Usually one colour will predominate in a particular spot, so you can get purple and white hillsides only a mile apart.

A google image search gives you startlingly different results if you search for "heather pink" rather than "pink heather". "Heather orange" or the other way round gives you a lot of fabric-related hits but you really don't want to know. Please. Don't go there.

OK, what about L-R-V ??

I'm thinking this would be a fun way to pull colors for the quilts that are planned for family members...that way, if I don't like their favorite colors (I can't stand pnik, for instance), then I can tell them I used their initials for the colors.

Depends on the variety - there are over 600 of them! Like all plants they are been played around with by plant breeders.

There are pictures here:

Wild moorland heather tends to be pink like the first picture, but Scottish lucky heather is white.

The leaves are usually a dark green, but can be almost lime green or even a sort of sage green, and they can be either winter or summer flowering. The cultivated varieties can be various shades of pink, purple, pale pink, white, yellow. As I said, the cultivated varieties have been played around with!

Nice answers about heather. I think I'm going to go with one of the richer pinks. I love that color chart, Kim. I'm going to bookmark it and make use. I love a couple of those colors. Hmmmmm, this is going to be pretty -- Sage green, dark charcoal/gray, rich pink. Not too bad.
