Need ideas for a little girl's dress-up box

A friend has decided to be creative rather than buying her children gifts this year. Her daughter is almost four and loves to play dress-up. Since I don't have any little girls in my life I am helping fill a dress-up box. After Halloween I bought a tiara and little girl white gloves on a close-out. Today I gathered a piece of pink netting onto a ribbon for a ballerina skirt. The mother has contributed several pieces of costume jewelry and funny hats. She made a wand by attaching a silk flower onto a dowel rod covered in ribbon. Any other suggestions of items we could make from things around the house?

For her son she has made a wonderful puppet theater from a sturdy packing box complete with curtain which opens and closes. He already owned puppets but she has glued other props to dowel rods so they can move in and out of the scene.

Wish more parents saw the value of creativity.

You can make wonderful long capes and skirts from table cloths, both lace and fabric! A tote bag and a "poke bag" would be good additions, too -- make one out of something lacy for a princess. Place mats make great clutch purses.

Do you know any bridesmaids who would be delighted to get rid of gowns they will never ever wear again? You need shoes. Dress up an old umbrella and create a parasol. Perfume? Maybe just a couple of drops of the real thing in a pretty bottle that contains mostly water. And friends. Dress-up is best when there are lots to giggle with. Polly

Some old high heels that have been attacked by glue and red glitter. Every little girl needs a pair of ruby slippers!

Wait, wait! One more thing. The dress up box simply must have a boa. It will be okay if it is molting just a bit but there's just nothing so special as a feather boa . . . except maybe a bridal veil. Can I come play too? Polly

Some of your old flowery skirts: they would be long on a child and just need some tape or elastic at the waitband.

Thrift shops for old hats: big ones, caps, bowlers, a tophat would be a find, straw ones. Then shawls, capes and headscarves.

Boots, shoes and ballet slippers.

WIGS: home made wool ones, or wahsed ones from Oxfam (or other such)

coloured tights, especially thick ones.

Long ears on a headband

A velvet cutaim amde into a princess cloak by pulling up the heading and tying off firmly. Add a clasp if you can get one.

Will that do for starters?

Nel (Gadget Queen) and ex-dress-up-dolly!

Try a second-hand store for shoes. Or glue some bling to a pair of flip-flops. You might find a long skirt in slinky fabric that could be shortened to a safer length and given an elastic waistband. Or turned into a superhero cape. Maybe a feather or fake-fur boa. And BIG glittery clip-on earrings and other jewels. Roberta in D

I'd think any thing brightly colored, satiny, or sparkly that is sitting in a donate pile would be a great addition to the dress up box. Also, a feather boa.

Love the idea of the puppet theater.
