OT: dad update

Well things have taken a step or two back. Last week, dad had a bout of diarehhea and ended up with an infection in his stomach. His heart was also being stressed, so he was moved to another rehab center where they focus more on the lungs. Today, he was moved back to ICU. His kidneys are starting stress (apparently from the meds), is on as much oxygen as they can give without being on a ventalator, on a feeding tub again, oxygen mask. Right now, the hip replacement is not the concern. I can't believe how much has changed in 10 days. It is so frustrating and depressing. I haven't been able to sleep tonight so I called over to the hospital and spoke to his nurse. The nurse said "he is definitely not well but holding his own right now." So that was encouraging. Needless to say, we are all stressed out again and battling the major blues.I am heading back on Thursday for the weekend. So if you could say an extra prayer or two, we would greatly appreciate it. The long road to recovery has become a little bit longer in the past few days. Thanks! Grace

Hullo Grace I am so sorry to hear about this setback. I suppose they are inevitable, with all the major trauma to the body; but none the less difficult to bear for all that. Funnily enough, one night when my own Dad was very ill, I couldn't sleep either. I rang the hospital (as someone reminded me they are on duty all night), and spoke to the actual nurse looking after him. She described the set up in the ward, told me where she was sitting at her desk, in relation to my Dad; told me about the gentle light over his bed; and said she would be there for another four hours. It was *SO* comforting, just to know he was not in the dark

- that had been a fixation of mine that night; and was not alone. So, while there is nothing you can do, someone will be looking after him. I always felt, later, that I helped get him better: the nurses couldn't get him to eat or drink. They asked us if there was anything he never refused? I remembered 'ice cream'. We got some from the ward kitchen, I fed it to him (frightening reversal of roles there), and after a few days he was on the road to recovery. I do hope you will get better news soon. .

So sorry to hear of his set back. It sounds like he is getting good care. Try not to stress too much, you must not get sick yourself. Stay strong, good thoughts on the way. Linda

There's nothing worse than sitting next to a loved one in hospital, watching them breathe and praying that each breath won't be their last... watching my Dad on oxygen whilst having another angina attack was awful, knowing that the only thing I could do was to hold his hand.

But the nurses are always wonderful - one especially lovely lady called Pippa said "we are always here, 24 hours, if you want to ring us at any time day or night we can let you know how he is - we know that you are scared and we will do what we can to help you."

My Dad is recovering slowly but steadily, so my prayers are now with you.

Hugs, Suzie B
