Pot holder innards

I'm toying with the idea of making some potholders. I know there is a special batting that can be bought for this purpose (whose name escapes me at the moment). Is this pretty standard, or are their other things that work equally well?

Thanks!

I used Thin-sulate. But I never used the potholder- it was for a class I taught and I gave my sample to the LQS owner as a little thank you. But the LQS owner said to have the Thin-sulate next to the heat and a layer of Warm & Natural/White next to the hand- and we used that reflective stuff like an ironing board cover, too. Might have been overkill, but who wants burned hands, right?

Michelle, here we go again, it depends. If you're reaching for a 500° cast iron Dutch oven, you need a pair of those really serious store-bought gloves. If you're just doing 'for show', then it doesn't really matter much. I by-pass the stiff potholders in the drawer and always reach for the face cloth folded in half twice and blanket-stitched around. If you want to be thrifty, you could put a new cover on your ironing board and use the untouched areas of the old one to back your potholders. Polly

I have probably made a hundred pot holders :) I use a product called "insul-brite" which is designed for hot pads, oven mits, potholders, etc. and then add one layer of regular batting.

Got it at Joann fabrics. Great stuff.

Thanks Polly. Actually, I do need want to have "functional" pot holders, but like you, I'm not a big fan of those that are really stiff and hard to fold. I like your ironing board cover idea. :-)

I made a bunch of "fingertip oven mitts" (free pattern on my website, BTW) for Xmas gifts last winter, and kept a couple for the house. My husband says I should double the insul-brite batting on the next set I make because they didn't protect him adequately when removing a cookie sheet from the oven. link for the pattern (PDF)
