Well, darn!

I have a favorite deep violet sand-washed silk/linen outfit and I was planning on wearing it to a 50th anniversary party Sunday. It has 10" bands of rayon embroidery around the hem of both the top and pants, and very subtle beading. I had sent it to the cleaners several months ago, so today I thought I'd give it a press.

Well! Apparently the cleaners had attempted to remove something from the top, and processed it at least twice...it was a couple shades lighter than the pants. :-( I decided I had nothing to lose, went out and got packages of purple and navy Rit dye and using the washer method and cool water, I put the (dampened) top in for 10 minutes, then added the pants and agitated for 40 minutes more. I've now rinsed three times, no more dye seems to be releasing, and I've hung them to dry. The wet fabric seems a little darker then the wet swatch of the original color.

The outfit was dry clean only but I figure if I've ruined it que sera, sera... it's no worse then having them two mismatched colors.

Wish me luck, I'll press them tomorrow.

Good luck!

I just tea dyed a dry clean only silk chiffon georgette... It came out perfectly, so see me a happy bunny! I'm wishing you the same success.

Well....crapola. I hope the dye job does what you want. I will be keeping a good thought about it.

Thanks! I just pressed a white shirt I want to wear today on a flying trip to the OR cost, and while I had the iron hot, I pressed a little of the used-to-be-violet-now-more-like-light-purple outfit, and it looks like the dye took very evenly, and the pants and top are now the same shade. So fortune smiled. ;-)

Thanks, it looks very much like I am in luck!

I'm headed to the beach today to buy a special print of the exact area where our group of friends always stayed and played when we were younger. I think it will make a perfect

50th anniversary gift.

.....I pressed a little of the

Indeed. Now I can wear it Sunday with the Iolite earrings and ring which used to match exactly, and are still "close enough". ;-)

Thanks! I know they will appreciate it, it brings back such fond memories for me. Our group spent every long summer weekend there in the 60s and 70s.

Follow-up: The fabric was very stiff when I pressed it Thursday after hanging overnight to dry, not at all the nice soft hand it had originally. So today, with nothing to lose, I tossed it in the dryer on "air fluff" (no heat), inside-out, with a damp towel and half of a dryer sheet. Proceeded to press it while still just slightly damp, and now its nice and soft again. Happy, happy, happy.... ;-)

I wash silk in the washer and dry it in the dryer all the time. I've gotten to the point that if it doesn't respond well, it can go in the rag bag. I no longer want clothes that have to have special treatment.

I do too, but with this particular combination of silk and linen I was loath to risk it. That's why I sent it to the dry cleaners. Now however, it will henceforth be laundered at home. ;-)

A silver lining to the cloud. If anything deserves special treatment, it's us, not our clothes. ;-)

I'll second that thought! ;->
