Sure you can... except to bed. Or in the shower or other wet environment. Although, the Birkie clogs would probably be OK with the wetness, but tend to slip off when they get squishy inside. Most of my shoes are fairly plain, but I have no problem with wearing "expressive" (or at least, loud) clothes AND jewelry.... Some people have said a certain pair of my clogs are "loud"... but they're just plain patent leather (in bright orange, but very plain).

This thread has, believe it or not, triggered my own personal Shoe Revolution.
When I was a kid, I got a new pair of sneakers once a year, or whenever my old pair was outgrown or decrepit beyond wearing. As a teenager, when I had my own money, I learned about thrift store shoes (BLESS THEY LITTLE SOULS!) and as a young 20-something, I went right ahead and spent all my wage-slave espresso-shop money on nice shoes if I damn well felt like it. As a single mom, though, I learned that I didn't have money for such frivolity if I wanted to have electricity and running water, so shoe-buying became a game of thrift-store happenstance... if a good pair of shoes happened to show up in my size, I bought them whether I'd been loking for them or not. I also bought clearance shoes as I happened upon good deals. The last time I bought brand-new shoes for myself was at the Adidas outlet store on my 30th birthday with the assistance of my friend Ana's employee discount card.
Tonight, I revised the rules a little. I gave myself permission, for the first time in almost a decade, to buy new shoes if I want them. This is HUGE: I now have the freedom to *go looking* for a specific pair of shoes, and to buy them when I find the ones I want.
The corrolary to that is that I have forbidden myself to buy shoes just because they're "a good deal". I am now permitted to *only* purchase shoes I genuinely want to own and wear!
The final freedom I have acquired in this process is the freedom to
*finally* get rid of shoes I rarely or never wear, which I've been holding on to on the basis of "when will I be able to replace them if I need them?"I don't need them, and if I did, suddenly, need a pair of say, cream flats, I now have permission to buy them. Not just the ones I happened upon on sale years ago, but ones I *want* and would actually wear.
I feel so free! Not only that, but since I couldn't find *exactly* the pair of red Mary Janes I wanted, I bought *none at all*. I can wait, because I have permission.

Up here the only completely unfashionable footwear is "stupid". Many impractical shoes verge on downright dangerous. You know, broken bones, frostbite, stiletto heels where all the driveways are dirt, etc.

LOL! that rings so many bells for me! Jamie and Jeannie are 'shoe nuts'. don't ask me why. they have many multiple pairs of shoes. and i'm lucky if i have TWO pair in the house at one time. Jamie actually looked at me one time and said, "Mom, you know, it really IS okay to have more than two pairs of shoes!"
but for me, it wasn't! I had one pair for work and one pair for 'dress-up'. maybe. or one work pair and one pair of sneakers. but since i hate the feel of shoes on my feet, i'm usually out of them the first chance i get.
raising the three kids on my own, maybe i just considered them an extravagance i couldn't afford.

At least you can find shoes to fit in a store. For me to get my extra-wide size 11 hooves into something interesting, I have to shop the same place the drag queens do. Or used to but in the UK it's damn hard to find anything that looks nice and isn't teeny. I'm 5'9" which isn't too tall but in a country where the recent surveys show that the average height of women is
5'0", finding anything that's long enough in the leg and wide enough in the butt without looking like it came from my grandma's closet is damn hard, not to mention something that doesn't look like an orthopedic nightmare for my feet. I have high arches to boot. Speaking of which, I miss my cowboy boots!I wear a shoe size larger than my husband, which at least keeps him from mixing up our trainers. I honestly can't remember the last time I wore dress shoes anywhere.

I'm at the other end of the scale. I take size 3 and have to buy all children's shoes (except when Faith get new stick in and I'm the first person in to find a pair that I like and in my size!)

Oh, Charlie, I feel for you!! I wear a child's size 2 or 2 1/2 depending on the style and a women's size 4. The most comfortable shoes I've found are the All Weather Moc by Land's End, sold at Sears. And they look just like the grown-up's shoe...LOL

Funny how that works out, I've often wondered if my dad's father (we don't know his name but he must have been a very handsome guy) was a travellin' man. Seems I have virtual sisters in some odd and interesting places.
