New Business Cards ~OT~

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from Kalera Stratton :

]There is, unfortunately, no way for anyone without a computer to buy my ]beads, and I wouldn't want to disappoint anyone by making them think ]they could! I may simply put Portland, OR on my cards, to give people a ]sense of physical location.

then that would probably work. until you start putting them in galleries and bead stores, anyway!

Oh, I don't really plan to... possibly galleries in five years or so when Ophelia's in kindergarten, but not bead stores, because it's more running around than I'm interested in, and then, if I get what I need to make for a bead, the end customer is charged *twice* what I think the bead's worth! I used to do galleries, but I was younger, and had no children then, and might do them again someday, but I'm really digging selling online. It's so direct, and nowadays most of the people who would even consider buying a whole set of matching lampwork look online because it would be cost-prohibitive in a store, because of the necessary markup.

Shoot, the last store I had approach me never got back to me after I told them my prices, and that was *after* I offered them a hefty discount for bulk orders!

can i say [without it sounding wrong] then it's my belief one of two things might be "wrong".

if you get what you need for the bead from a shop owner, then the price the customer is charged in a retail outlet IS what it is worth. if you're not thinking that way . . . maybe you need to readjust your perspective - UP?

if you see what i mean?

otoh, one reason i prefer to buy from web sites is that i'm more comfortable that way - i know what the maker thinks the bead is worth, and if i can afford it when i see it, it's a done deal. auctions make me VERY uneasy, because i would not insult an artist deliberately for anything. otooh, there are so many i would love to have, and i'm always afraid if i don't snatch it up right then and there, i'll never get another chance [witness TINK!]

Well, thank you, VJ!

I do very much enjoy selling direct, but who knows... someday I may want to change my direction.
