Oldbies

Jan in NZ here. This year I will have been married for 34 years to Mike. We live on a farm which we lease out but I grow lavenders for oil and rubbings on a small area. We have 3 offspring, our daughter lives in London , is a scientist and has just bought an appartment or rather the mortgage to one, with her partner, our oldest son is married and an engineer and our youngest has just headed to Uni to be an engineer. I teach full time at the local High School so usually read the group but seldom reply because life rushes past too quickly. I love to travel, to read, to collect paper weights, to do family history and bead work especially French Beaded flowers. I enjoy people and get togethers and gardening. I guess I also collect bead books especially French beaded flower books. So far I have found only one other person in New Zealand doing beaded fowers and she is an

8 hour drive away. We are getting more bead stores here but they are expensive. Cheers, Jan

How weird! I'm 5"10" (I may have shrunk half and inch over the years, need to check that...). I was 124 lbs. It was a comfortable weight for me, also (thin bones). Then I had kids. I was 150 for a long time. Then thyroid problems set in. I was below 125 in a flash. I'm taking pills, hoping it will settle down on its own. Oh, I'm not really an oldbie, but not a newbie either. Mostly I just lurk. I'm in the middle of buying a new house and moving into it after 16 yrs in one spot. Boring. Now my MIL is moving in with us, so we had to get a bigger house. Which means I have to fix up ours and get it on the market. I'm also selling MILs condo, closing next week. Everything must be completed, closed, packed moved and settled by the end of March. My first show of the season is the first weekend in April. Must be ready. This is totally insane. I must be crazy. Let's see. I'm 52. Born in So CA. 3rd generation native Californian. Escaped. Live in the Midwest (for now--I hear NM calling....). Moved to the midwest w/husband no. 2. Had 2 kids. Soon to be ex husband moved back to Ca to live on a sailboat. I was painting at the time, oils. I looked around me at a show I was doing and said "whose making money at this". It was potters, stained glass, and jewelry. Having strung a lot of beads in my hippy days in the 60s, I felt jewelry was the answer to my financial dilemma. I knew how to solder, so I added silver to the bead-stringing. And started a business. Met husband no. 3. Having been just laid off from his job, he joined me on the road doing shows 35 weekends a year. On year

6, he had a complete breakdown. PTSD from Nam set in. He is still completely disabled. My son (then12) started doing shows with me. Far fewer than before, however. Matt was a natural-born salesman. We made a hell of a team until he went into the Marine Corps last year. His brother is studying computer animation out in Phoenix. I added glass to my line about 4 years ago. Still playing with it. I probably will do very few shows this year, with all the moving and having to build a new studio. The house is great, but I like my studio to be above ground and somewhat isolated from the rest of the house, so it will have to be added on. I have 3 cats and a whippet. I've been a production supervisor in an electronics plant in LA., Admin. Assistant, roofer, run a tool crib, run a shipping dept. I like what I do now best. I enjoy SF and anything else in print except romance novels. I listen to all kinds of music, except rap and country western. I like riding in the mountains and sleeping under the stars. I also love a good performance of all forms of dance, theatre music. And I rode with an outlaw motorcycle club for seven years. (husband no. 1) Is that enough? (not proof read...hit send..... I love to garden too. The house we just bought sits on a half acre lot. It's all lawn right now....that's about to change. I only require enough room to have a picnic with a dozen or so people. The rest is plants! Barbara Dream Master

It was almost 70 degrees outside today. I sat on the porch and now I hear the dirt and weeds calling me. I'm looking forward to spring and planting again.

I already have bulbs coming up. It was in the 70s here today too! Wonderful, beautiful spring like weather. I hate the groundhog for seeing his shadow...dang it. That's why we got snow!

I hope my bulbs don't come up. They did that last year and then went dormant or something when it got cold again. It's suppose to be around 70 again tomorrow. I'm going to sit in the sun and soak up some vitamins and hopefully some energy too.

It hit 80 here yesterday! I planted basil and other herbs last weekend, so now I'm waiting impatiently for my first batch of pesto. I keep telling myself that this time next year I should have a REAL garden. Can't wait!

Well as a general lurker I read the messages regulary but have not posted. Let me introduce myself. My name is Grace and I started out making loom beaded head stalls for horses. I am 52 years old. My beading has developed into a long passion. I was married 21 years to a wonderful man that has passed away. We had 5 children between us which are all now grown. For years I decorated eggs and crocheted and love to craft in general. Live in San Diego CA so the weather is outstanding most of the time. After our terrible fire storms I have been busy with all sorts of community things. I stay at home with all my animals and a new relationship that is going wonderful. I raised horses and dogs so that keeps me a bit busy. I have a web site which is a work of my own. My web site is

I'm looking forward to replanting everything into pots. I've been collecting wierd and odd shapes to put in my garden. I had an old toilet, but my husband said that it's over the top. LOL

Now, now. It's only 3 months to Victoria Day. Even in Whitehorse we could start planting then.
