OT: Anybody have experience...

with peptic ulcers? I'm thinking the symptoms I've had for the last (DON'T SAY IT) year or so are not gall bladder as I'd suspected, but ulcer instead.

I have a dr appt next week, but I'm curious...

anybody have ulcers and been treating for em???

I think (based on my husband's gall bladder experience) that the level of pain with gall bladder is excruiating (sp?), more like a heart attack. I think with ulcers you have pain before you eat rather than after and the pain is not as bad (but of course it's difficult to measure pain and it varies from person to person). I don't think if it were gall bladder that you would have been able to stand that kind of pain for a year. Patti

the latest thinking on ulcers incudes testing for "heliobacter pylori " a bacteria that causes ulcers. If the doc does not do this test he is not thoroughly doing a gastric distress workup. If you have that kind of ulcer the treatment is a combination of 3 antibiotics for 2-3 weeks. This MAY provide a complete cure- not always. It is a blood test to see if you have it. Of course there are also the usual suspects for treatment-tagamet,prilosec,prevacid,nexium- all are advertised for reflux but they reduce acid production in the stomach and therefore relieve ulcers as well. Most of them were originally developed for ulcers but the companies found a bigger mkt treating people who think they have reflux. the old bland diet thing is gone. diet does not cause ulcers, some foods that are irritating can make them hurt more. some people even think that capsacin- the stuff that makes pepper hot- helps ulcers. I have not seen any research to support this. An easy test is to get the over the counter dose of one of the popular drugs and take twice the recommended dose for a couple of days to see if it helps. Not sure thing but certainly helps get pointed in the right direction. For example, tagamet comes in 100 mg tablets over the counter, the standard Rx dose is 300 to 400mg.

Keith had the HP test - not the cause of his ulcer. He had to have a gastroscpic exam twice (three times?) now. And I think they'd like to do it once more to make sure everything is still okay.

To keep the ulcers from reappearing (his ulcers were bleeding and close to breaking thru the outer surface), he takes Previcid OTC now. He was on Tagamet for some time and Carafate suspension liquid as well.

Life's been fun with him. He had disk removeal surgery in 2001 (an overnight stay in the hospital), the bleeding ulcers in 2002 (three nights in the hospital), and the heart attack last year (five nights in the hospital). I made him make me a New Years Promise - no overnight stays in the hospital in

2004. So far he's sticking to that promise.

I started to develop an ulcer in the early 1980's due to a very stressful time in my life (death of my baby brother). The pain I had was in the *center* of my torso, a little bit under my breastbone. It was a sharp burning pain that would stick around for a few hours and it usually felt like someone had punched me in the stomach.

OTOH, before I had my infected gallbladder removed, the pain from the gall bladder was located under my breast on my far *right* side. Nausea, vomiting, sometimes with pain radiating to my neck and back shoulder blade were some of the symptoms. Get thee to a doc and feel better! :) Linda
