OT: Freaking Out!

I don't know what to do but I'm freaking out after reading too much on the net. I received a primate bite today. It was very innocent and I didn't think he even broke the skin until it wouldn't stop bleeding a few minutes later.

What I'm freaking out about is that it's numb and has sharp pains. I read that I might need rabies shots (again) and that they have some diseases that are bad.

Here is my conflict. The primate belongs to a very good friend of mine. I would hate to report the incident since he might have to go to an animal control shelter, etc. I just can't do it to her. I can't tell the doc what happened or he'll have to report it. DH is telling me that if I see a doc he is going to have to report it by law.

The bite where the large canine punctured the skin has already swollen and looks infected even though we took precautions. Girls and guys his canines are large. They are super large. They are this..................................BIG! I didn't realize it had gone in that far because the bite didn't hurt as bad as it looks.

So, I'm going to be up all night fretting and worrying about what to do. My friend has called me several times to ask if I'm okay. I even went back to the primate's room and made friends again. I don't know what set him off, he just bent down, grabbed my ankle and then bit me. After that it was a whirlwind because his "daddy" was pissed and chasing him around the room.

All this because they brought a baby primate home today and I had to go visit. She is so small she fits in your hands at a month old. She is adorable. DH already said NO. Trinkett wouldn't like her anyhow.

Starlia - get to a doctor now! If this person is really your friend, she will understand! If it were *my* primate, I would have driven you to the doctor myself.

I'm at least waiting until the morning. I heard that rabies shots aren't nearly as bad as they were when I was a kid. I hope it doesn't come to that. I was actually playing it off and saying he'll probably get sick from biting me. LOL

I promise I'll get doc's opinion in the morning.

Starlia, this is _very_ serious. Your life is MUCH more important than an animals life, hands down!! And if you lose the friend, too bad!! It's your HEALTH and LIFE you're talking about!!!

Starlia... my very best friend in the whole world (since 3rd grade on) had a weasel climb into her dryer from the outside vent. The weasel never bit her; she only got it's blood on her hands & arms. The weasel got cuts when my friend turned the dryer on and it tried to escape back out through the vent. Yet even though she only cleaned up the weasels blood, she ended up almost dying and was VERY ILL for FOUR MONTHS... all due to a disease called "Rat Bite Fever"... even thought she wasn't even bitten!!

Animal blood and _especially_ their saliva carry ALL sorts of nasty stuff!! Get to a doctor immediately so you can start on antibiotics!!!!!!!!

If it were a dog or cat or any other pet or animal you'd do what you need to do.

I won't be popular here but I firmly believe that primates are NOT pets.

I hope you feel better but you need to take more thought for yourself than for an animal that could bite again.

Not to mention the fact that there is a *reason* for mandatory reporting. It's not there just to be 'mean.' Whether it be to keep it from biting again, or to make sure the necessary vaccinations are given. It could prove to help someone else down the line, or prevent what happened to you. I don't know how it works...do they even give vaccinations to primates?

ER or doc in a box immediately. Monkey pox is not funny, it is deadly. A lot of primates carry viruses without symptoms for them- they can kill humans. Someone with all the problems you already have should not take any chances. Even a dog bite, one that has had all it's shots, can be very serious. I have a scar from 30 yrs ago from one canine tooth of a german shepard. The doc had to dig around to clean out the wound. No telling what he ate before tasting me.

Exactly, Armand. In my friends case, the virus that the weasel carried entered into my friends bloodstream through a small cut or hole in her skin when she cleaned up it's blood.

Please check in with us, Starlia! I'm worried... :(

I'm okay but the bite is worse. The area around the bite is bright red and it hurts to walk. DH got me an appointment with doc tomorrow. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Tomorrow? Why not today? With an infection, there is no time to lose. Starlia, please please please go right now.
