OT - I Hate Outlook. Help!

Ok, I've had it. I can't run a business with an email program that continues to lock me out at least once a month, if not more and I have to restore a backup and go through hundreds of duplicate emails and unnamed file folders that need to be put back (manually!) into their right space. I just don't have the time for this. Can ya hear my frustration yet? Not to mention that I don't know how to restore it every time it crashes so I have to wait until my husband can do it. ARGH!

So, please recommend to me a new mail reader, preferable free. Netscape? Do they have one? Eudora? Is it good?

I don't want some cheesey program just because it's free. I need GOOD too.

Thanks in advance...I know y'all will come through.

I really liked using Thunderbird by Mozilla. It's free, and good. I had to switch back to Outlook (gag, sputter, spew), so that DH and I can sync our calendars with each other and with our respective PDAs. But while I was using it, TBird was fantastic! I rarely dropped messages (as long as they got through the ISP, and i believe i got 99% of them), and never got locked out. You can use this for both multiple email accounts and for newsgroups, which makes it ideal for that. Only thing it lacks is a calendar.

Oh. that makes me wonder then. Can it sync with a pocket pc? Probably not, huh?

nope, it can't. We tried it with dh's. Not sure if there's much of an alternative in that case. Sucks, huh? I hate it when companies do stuff like that so you have to use ONLY their software to get your electronics to talk to each other. Ok, I'm NOT getting spun up about this...sigh. Anyway, are you using Outlook Express, or Outlook in a MS Office package? And if you're using MS Office, which version? MS Office 2003 is performing well so far, knock on wood.

try thunderbird. it is great, stable, you can sort e-mails in hundreds of ways, it has great junk mail control, you can do everything with it. i have been using it for 3 years now (okay, im writing this in outlook since my hard disc died), and im really really really satisfied. give it a try, you might really like it:) you can get it at

The Netscape package comes with an email program, and like Thunderbird, it's based on the Mozilla engine. I've been using various versions Netscape for my email ever since I dumped AOL 4 years ago, and have never had a problem.

I tried Eudora once, but I think I got a bad copy which brought in a trojan horse. I don't recommend this one, if only because you have to be ultra-careful about where you get it.

I haven't tried Thunderbird yet, but I have switched from IE to Mozilla's Firefox as a browser. It's pretty slick and has a built-in popup stopper.

Since I don't do PDA's I couldn't comment on the Syncing functionality of Netscape, although there is no calandar function, anyway. About the only thing my current version can do is export/import addresses. Whoopee.

Use Firefox(do the tweaks to make it faster!) to browse and Thunderbird for mail/news. You can't go wrong with those 2 programs. then install AVG and AdAware for the nasty stuff =)

I'm using Outlook 2003. My husband is as well but his has been just fine...he says he has other problems with Windows stuff.

Mine was also doing this weird thing of trying to send an email that wasn't there...maybe a receipt or something but we couldn't find it anywhere. Hubby finally got Outlook back running tonight after lots of backups and restores and that is solved now. But I'm only happy until it crashes again. We think it might have to do with the fact that he stores all of my data on the D drive so all of my data is in one folder and I can backup and burn to CD easily rjuather than having to grab it from a different place. So we're going to change that.

You just never know what will bother each other. I panic every time I see thatt here is a new Hewlette Packard update because printers and my system do not get along either. Ugh. I don't NEED my printer to take over and read my camera data! My camera does that for me just fine!

Anyway....breathing deeply and just happy I can open my Outlook again....at least long enough to get my data for another program. BTW, started trying Thunderbird and I don't like that you can't have a signature file. Hm. It's always something.

I've been using Mozilla's Thunderbird for email and Firefox for browsing for several months. They're not perfect, and they die now and then, but they've never locked up my pc nor caused me to have to restore email from a backup. I'm running XP home with all updates, Norton Internet Security, AdAware and SpyBot, as well.

HTH.

You all are winning me over. It seemed faster too, if that is possible.

I noticed that about Firefox, right away. The only thing that's making me crazy is that it doesn't interpret style sheets the same way IE does, so many of my web pages look funky.

However, if I weren't so happy with Netscape (which does do signatures, BTW), I'd probably switch over to Thunderbird, myself. :-)

Oh, yeah... go to

and check out the extentions for Thunderbird. There may be one in there for appending sig files.

You can have a signature file. You have to first make a data file in Word Pad or some such, and link to it by going to Tools, then Account settings. Click on the account you want to set up a signature for, and click the box next to "attach this signature" and either type in or browse to the location of the data file you created. There is a plug in called "Signature Switch" that you you can download from their website, or you can just create multiple documents..one for each email account. I found the latter to be easier anyway. Hope that helps.

I just use Mozilla Thunderbird... it's straightforward, free, and so far TOTALLY reliable. I switched when I'd had one too many disasters with Outlook.

I've had some email issues lately but they were server issues, not mailreader issues. I can definitely recommend Thunderbird!

Eudora. I use the free version. Ads are unobtrusive. Works just fine. I've used it ever since I've been on the net, over a decade now.

I've been using netscape for email since v4.0 (now I'm on v7.2); switched from eudora about a hundred years ago. I absolutely *refuse* to even try Outlook and I don't care how many tricks it does. But that's just me :)

Cheers, Carla

At this point I'm so frustrated that I'm actually considering getting a Mac...except that my new computer is only a couple years old and nowhere near needing to be replaced. Hm.

Save the cash and install Ubuntu Linux on your system.. The Macintosh OS/X is basically the same thing. Although Macs are nice, i would stay with the PC architecture. Want more info about Ubuntu let me know i will email you. You will have alot less problems with it. In addition to auto-updates, limited to NO viruses. Great worldwide support. If anyone is interested email me I don't want to fill up this newsgroup with off-topic material.

what do you mean about not doig signatures? just create textual file in which you could write whatevr you want, then go to Tools> Account settings> pick your account there (click on the accounts name), mark the box "attach signature", and then browse to find that previously mentioned textual file. this way you can program random signature generator if you use that textual file as output of your generator:)
