OT: Lost my fingerprint

Last night, while using my mandolin to julienne potatoes, the handle slipped off the potato, an I literally sliced most of the pad of my right forefinger off.

While losing a pint or two of blood, I searched in vain for the detached part, but couldn't find it.

When I didn't stop bleeding after a while, I went to the emergency room, where the doctor told me that there really wasn't anything that could be done, other than to stop the bleeding and dress the wound.

As you all may know, the nerves on the fingertip are extremely sensitive, and that's where the wound starts...right at the tip, and then down the pad...the throbbing will last only 2 or three days!!!

What this means is no jewelry making, no silversmithing, just sitting reading and eating bon-bons. BooHoo.

I never did realize how much I use that finger...I can't even hold a pen because of the way I hold mine. I just tried to stir my cocoa, and just touching the spoon sent me over the edge.

Typing is a labor intensive job because of keeping the finger off of the keyboard and trying to hit the right keys.

Anyway, just a little rant about this stupid thing.

OOOoooh, I'm totally sympathic having chopped off the end of my left ring finger, I don't have a full finger print either, it's a cut across by a big scar. My left is my 'holding hand', the one that clamps bits of metal to the jeweler's peg!! You poor baby! Take some pain killers and watch some movies, anything to distract yourself from the pain!! Mine healed up pretty quickly..I hope yours does too.

You have my sympathy. I sliced into my finger with a piercing saw. Still got the silver in my finger to prove it. I have lost the sensation in my finger from where it got cut to the tip. Shirley

Oh ow ow ow!!! I had something similar happen years ago (dumb way, not worth repeating) but thankfully (mostly) it was the upper tip right under the nail, not the pad part. The only bad thing was it was my left hand and I was playing guitar semi-pro at the time (pool parties for money wow!). I couldn't play for over two weeks, it hurt so much. It WILL heal, and chances are you'll even get your print back. But in the meantime OWWWWWWW!

Something similar happened to me but much dumber... I was cutting chicken wings, imiting Yan from Yan Can Cook tv show, with the big large cutter... I found the little piece of pinky, put it back on and taped everything tight. It healed easily but I keep a scar. When hubby got back home and saw what happened, he put the cutter in the trash.

Sure is. It's part of the Cuisinart Specialty Disk Set at Amazon.com (probably in other sets as well, but this is the one I have) Search on "Cuisinart Julienne" to find it.

Oddly enough, even though I have the Cuisinart and all the goodies, unless I'm making a whole boatload of food, I am much faster using a chef's knife.

Here's a story to help you heal. At least it can give you a laugh.

One day, years ago, I was rushing to wash the dishes before catching a flight to Germany for a huge customer presentation. I'm standing at the sink in my power suit, and hit the edge of one of my incredibly sharp chef's knives. (It shouldn't have been in the sink, and Bob isn't supposed to use my knives at all, after the "pencil sharpening incident," but that's a whole 'nother story) I cut the tip off my pointy finger, and was bleeding all over the stinking kitchen.

I called Bob to help me, and he came running. Unfortunately, he saw the blood, turned a bunch of shades of green, then ran into the bathroom to throw up. My faithful Sophie, pulled a total anti-Lassie manouver and started licking the blood up off the kitchen floor. (ewww) I figured my chances of getting DD to help were zero, because she was only four or so at the time.

So, I'm standing in my kitchen with a dish towel wrapped around my hand, trying to keep my suit clean. Dog is licking blood off the floor, husband in in the bathroom, losing his lunch. I'm in a houseful of potential helpers, all of whom have proven utterly useless. What to do?

After a few moments contemplating how ridiculous the whole situation seemed, I went downstairs, and my mother in law fixed me up with some butterfly bandages. We both agreed it could have used a few stitches, but I didn't have time before my flight. (Flying in a pressurized airplane with a throbbing finger is not fun)

I gave the customer presentation, and when I asked if there were any questions, I only got one: "Frau Nicklas, what did you do to your finger?"

Even the Germans were laughing by the end of the story.

Thanks, Barb, and everyone else who replied in the original thread. Off-hand and away from my kitchen, I'm not sure what brand of food processor I have. However, I will definitely be looking into this!

Thanks! Alison

Ouch! I feel for you. I know that the nerve endings in the fingers and toes are super sensitive. I had to have a planters wart removed in my foot and yeeeouch!

Everyone is right, take plenty of pain killers and relax. You need to be pain free right now so you'll heal faster.
