**sigh** my dad used to rant about "women in the military" and [since women confined together seem to adjust their cycles to each other] what would happen on a nuclear sub when they all had PMS at the same time.

now that lady astronaut was okay. she was old enough to have finished with all that.

Yes, and she brought them up with her doctor (whom she has reason to trust), who thought the diuretic was a less-than-good idea for her because of some other thing she was taking. I forget the details.

But lately she's been doing better. One or two migraines per cycle, that last most of a day, but not longer. She used to have as many as eight per cycle, -- the week before, during and then the week after. Left her with only about one week per month when she was migraine-safe.

When she's in the midst of a migraine and isn't at work or with clients, I can at least give her neck and back-rubs. It may not stop the pain, but it helps her to relax a bit in spite of it, and has a bit of creature-comfort factor.

No one will be happier to see the end of her monthly cycles than she will, though. Unfortunately, her doctor has warned that for a few people, even menopause doesn't stop the cyclical migraines. Which seems utterly weird, since they presumably have a hormonal trigger, and your hormones aren't the same after menopause.

Some people have migraines that don't have a hormonal trigger, even though it may seem that they do before menopause. My mom is a prime example. She has vascular migraines as opposed to the hormonal kind. She's had them since she was a little girl. Menopause didn't affect them one way or another. She mostly gets them after she's just gotten through a stressful day...and they can come at any time. My SIL on the other hand, hers are hormonal, as are mine. SIL has HORRIBLE ones, and the doc think it's because she has too much estrogen...and I think that is the case with me as well, since I'm estrogen dominant. When I use natural progesterone cream they go away nearly completely. They got better for SIL when she used it, but didn't go away completely, but hers are way more severe and frequent than anyone i've ever seen. There are ways to deal with the vascular type migraines, though, and my mom can live fairly pain free. Instead of having headaches 3 or 4 days a week, she gets them once every week or two. I know, not encouraging, but it's better. And better is good.

I hated it when I was in the Army. We learned all the tactica training, but at that time we couldn't go into combat. What a waste of good training.

Hugs to Genny...it's a hard thing to deal with. Has she been to see a neurologist? I know it's helped my mom immensely.

And when do you think we could get together to meet? I'd love to visit with you sometime on the way through Portland either on the way to my parents' house or on the way home. I promised you some of my poly clay beads, and I should have some in a few weeks. ooooh, and i'm thinking of stopping in at Shipwreck on the way....

There's talk of an all women's sub crew...a big problem they're having is how to stock enough hygene products, and how to dispose of the used ones, because they can't have them lying around the sub for very long, being a blood product. What if they had to be submerged for a long period of time....that kind of thing, and what if they had hemmhoraging problems, etc....an honest concern I'd think. I highly doubt there will come a time where they'll have a co-ed crew on a sub...for the submersion and long term "confinement" issues. I have no problems with women in combat (any more than i have problems with people in combat to begin with...but i won't go there), but the menstrual cycle can cause problems even with that, from some reports. Fair, perhaps not, but men and women are indeed different in some ways, and there's not a lot we can do about some things. I do, however, wish the military would quit training people for things they're not intending to allow them to do. It's a waste of time and money.

Just a quick comment-- as I'm still sorta new here, I am not in the loop with everyone's migraine issues. But I know that sometimes menstruation and CHOCOLATE go together, and chocolate is a big migraine trigger.

This has probably been mentioned already, but just thought I'd mention it anyway, in case somehow it was overlooked.

Stopping at Shipwreck, are you? You probably shouldn't have mentioned that ;-)

This is my problem. When I consider whether men, women or both should go into combat, my answer is "Neither".

No. She tends to be fairly stoical, so things have to get really bad before she looks for new treatment options. But I'm around now, and fairly observant about her states-of-being, and I can bug her to take the next step if things get worse instead of better.

yes. i know that. but they are working on it. it and being a Navy Seal are the only things left women can't do.

my father generally used extreme examples of why "women shouldn't be allowed to . . . "

that's the operative phrase. the Navy has been second only to the Marines in opening things up to women.
