OT: Stray kitty help!!

Ok - so I just went out to get some food (yes it's late - I sleep late, go to bed late). So as I pull in there is this tiny solid white kitty near the door. I try to coax it over - no doing. Drove through the drive-thru and the kitty has come to that side and then goes towards the back (where the dumpster is).

After I get my food I drive over there and chat with the kitty. It's scared enough it won't let me get too close - but it doesn't completely run away either. Dose lots of mewing at me.

I'm going back in the morning to see if I can rescue it. Any tips? I'll take a carrier and some food. The resturant is on a very busy road - I hope it stays in the back near the dumpster and some woods. Man if I had a DH of even a DBF - we'd back out there tonight!

It was just sooooo cute- it tugged at my heartstrings I think.

The best thing i use is the smellest can of sardines you can find. I have found the most feral cat(kitten) can't resist the smell and lots of patience sit with the open can near you and let your fingers get the smell. I have tamed some of the most wild cats and found them homes or kept them this way.

Most animal shelters have traps you can use -- bait it with sardines, stand back, and see it works.

I have a friend who routinely traps feral cats, gets them vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and releases them if they too old to adapt to domesticity. Of course, she keeps 9 out of 10 of them and finds them new homes :-)

Did you find the bitty kitty, yet?

Not yet - I went this morning, but it's raining here- and apparently the kitty has enough sense to not be out in the rain :)

I'm going again in a little bit.

No news yet. I went by about 5 times yesterday. Only once was it not raining. I'll make a few drive bys today just to check. The weather is supposed to be better tomorrow so I can go and "camp-out" :)

We got one of those humane traps and bait it with chunk light tuna in oil. (man, does it stink!) We live near some long abandoned quarries that are now being developed into housing, and the construction is displacing a lot of animals.

Every couple of months, we have to bait the trap and catch whatever animals have moved into the yard. Feral cats seem to respond well to the tuna, as do skunks and possums. Peanut butter works very well in attracting raccoons. The animal control guy then takes away the full trap and returns it, minus animal, the next morning.

I'd use the sardines if they were cheaper than the tunafish, because both are equally smell-a-rocious, IMHO.

I hope that the kitty finds a good home whether it's yours or someone else's.

Me too. Stopped by earlier today and didn't see it. I'm going to try again once it gets a little dark and see if it's about roaming about.

Since the kitten was out in the open when you saw it, is it likely that one of the employees has seen it? Maybe even taken it home - or might at least know if anyone else has taken it?

I thought about someone else picking it up. But I went by tonight and found it again. Hiding in the bushes. For a white cat it hides well :)

I didn't have my plan of capture/rescue worked out very well though. I think I was just glad to know it was ok.

I went to it (ok as close as I could) and we chatted and I gave it some food, but I didn't have the carrier out - also didn't have the smelly sardines. I don't know what I was thinking Doh!!

After I got the carrier out and opened etc the kitty had probably had enough food and wasn't so interested anymore.

Tomorrow will be another try- this time with the sardines in the carrier to start with! At least I know it got some food tonight.
