Such a pretty necklace, Kyla.

Straiations would suggest to me that it's dyed glass -- like the the "cherry quartz". There is also a very pale "blue quartz" which is quartz that's been irradiated or something.

Tina

That sounds like the stuff trade-named "Blueberry Quartz", which like the Cherry/Strawberry and Pineapple varieties, is a man-made glass stone with dye swirled thru it. The price also indicates as much.

Celine

Yeah, that's what I meant when I said dyed stone...bad choice of words on my part! I figured it had to be glass, because it was only a dollar, and the thing is HUGE! It's about 2in long, and an inch thick, with little facets all the way around.

This reminds me of my DH; he keeps picking on me lately because I've gotten

*stone-snobby*, as he puts it (trying to move from glass into gemstones). He keeps saying, "You know, technically, glass is a rock, too. SAND is a whole bunch of little rocks! Lets go down to the beach and grab a handful; save some money, and you'll get a nice assortment!"

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from "Kyla" :

]You know, technically, glass is a rock, too. SAND is a ]whole bunch of little rocks!

**grin** he's been talking to my rock & gem club. that's the logic they used to make me a member.

Remind him that you can charge considerably more for a necklace made with gemstones that's the same amount of work as one made with glass. Customers tend to be "stone-snobby" too!

And if you look at *stone* beads as well as semi-precious, you can get some really pretty and unusual stuff for not much more than you'd pay for glass. Try making things with some of the unusual agates, or leopard jasper, or rhodonite.

Celine

Yep, it was the facets that caught my eye. Very pretty, no matter what it is!
