I need opinions, please!
I was recently in a class where the instructor wanted us to use PowerPro for the project. Not wanting to purchase a roll of PowerPro just for that class, I had brought my white Fireline with me (in my little head, they were interchangeable). She told me not to use it, and go purchase a roll of PowerPro (the class was in a bead store, so it wasn't terribly inconvenient to get, mostly an unexpected expense). She explained to the class that she never uses Fireline because it's an inferior product as far as the longevity of our beading projects is concerned. She said that due to environmental concerns Fireline was created so that the sun will biodegrade the Fireline, and so projects made with Fireline would eventually fall apart.
On the flip side, I have been in multiple classes with a different instructor who loves Fireline, and it's the only stringing material I've ever used in any of her classes. She doesn't make any claims that PowerPro is inferior to Fireline, she just prefers Fireline. She says she does all her projects with Fireline, and has never had any problems with the end products.
I have come to like Fireline a lot, but PowerPro also works fine for me. What are your opinions on Fireline vs. PowerPro? I'd really like to know, so I can make an educated decision on which to use for future projects (and which to not re-stock up on!). I personally don't wear the same piece of jewelry day after day, and I'm also not really in the sun all that much, so I'm not terribly concerned with the sun making my jewelry fall apart. I can't confirm the same for pieces that I've made for other people - how frequently they wear things and for how long in the sun.
The pro-PowerPro teacher said PowerPro is not made to deteriorate in the sun, and thus is the superior product for stringing, and the only thing she would recommend for beadweaving or bead sewing projects. But isn't PowerPro also a "fishing line" type of product which might be subject to the same "environmenal concerns" and need to biodegrade?
What are the differences you may have found about using one over the other? Should I not even worry about it for my projects?
Thanks!
Karen :)
