Oh gosh....now I feel guilty about that comment! That ended up being a pretty bad storm. It ended up going just above us so all we had was a little wind, but we have some family up there that weren't so fortunate. My uncle who's 79 years old went up to Frostproof to protect a storage building he has up there. The roof blew off with him in it. He wasn't hurt, but very shaken up. Then my cousin and her husband up there raise miniature horses and didn't want to leave them, so they weathered out the storm in a their mobile home. Their roof was caved in by a fallen oak tree limb, and a roof blew off an empty trailer near them and wrapped completely around their pickup truck. With no water or power, they're going to be roughing it for a while. All the little horsies are fine though. They're so cute! They're more like big dogs the way they follow you around and beg if they see you eating something. Dawn *humbled*

Dawn -- as bad as all that was, it is a great relief to hear that the people involved and the little horses are all OK. It could very well have been otherwise.

What I want to know is why every time there is a storm predicted that people go bananas buying plywood, flashlights and boatloads of food. Here in New England, we get the phenomenon of people buying snow shovels, bottled water and batteries. What the frank?

I don't get it. Can't you re-use plywood as storm shutters, and once you've bought some number of flashlights, you don't need any more? We haven't reached flashlight nirvana at this point, because Manda eats them. I also wonder if springtime causes people to throw out their snow shovels from the previous winter? Ditto for snowblowers

I've lived through some hairy storms - the kind you never forget. One April 1 (note the ironic date), we got so much snow in a freak coastal storm that Manda's swingset was completely buried. (About 8 foot drifts) Hurricane Bob (another irony) dumped so much water in our backyard that the toolshed floated off its foundation, and the neighbor's above ground pool was under water. But the power didn't go out for either of these storms, and we certainly didn't lose water or telephone service. So why are people going nuts buying all the gallons of water in the store?

Hurricane Charley is scheduled to pass right over my town sometime this morning. Admittedly, it's lost a lot of punch, and I expect zero damage. Our total storm preparations: putting the lawn chairs in the garage. We're kinda low on groceries (except meat - never low on that!), but I'm in no hurry, and we can eat up some of the less exciting stuff that's been kicking around.

Don't get me wrong - my heart aches for those poor souls who have lost everything. From what I've read, the victims were mainly elderly folks who were afraid/unwilling to evacuate. But for the rest of the people for whom hurricanes are a regular phenomenon, why on Earth don't they get the house fitted with storm shutters (or at least hooks to hold the plywood and one set of plywood, marked where it should go) and just be done with it? Surely it's cheaper and less stressful than trying to do everything in one day every time there's a predicted storm.

It must be me, and my sleepless night talking.

I've noticed this, too: Every time the forecasters say that it's going to snow (never mind a major blizzard) the grocery stores are packed to the walls with people buying a month's worth of food. Don't they trust the DPW? Snow removal technology and tactics have improved dramatically in the past 20 years. And, if they *do* get snowed in, and the lights do go out, how are they going to cook all that food anyway?

As for snow shovels -- the Garage Goblins eat them....

It starts to get dark now around 10 pm. And soon we'll have an hour or so when the night is dark enough to see stars. Soon we will turn on a nightlight, besides the one in the windowless bathroom. Soon we will start using head lights again, occasionally. And soon we will buy lightbulbs. It's only around this time of year that we begin to notice burnt out yard lights, flashlights, etc!

Nope, I've never even seen one, that I can recall. I have tried all the chicks and ducks and pimplins though, and they have a rathericky after taste to me. Do cocoabats not have that?

WTF is a pimplin? OMG that sounds disgusting, especially when you add the whole creamy whiteness of marshmallow to the mental image. I meant pumpkins :)

I don't like them either. I only eat the falvored eggs at Easter, and the COCOABATS.
