Re: OT What movie did you see?

Bruce Almighty was very funny, my son loved it. He laughed until he fell out of his chair when the newsreader starts talking gibberish. I really want to see Cold Mountain, it hasn't arrived at the cinemas yet. I also want to see Last Samurai. With good direction, Tom Cruise is great.

I went to see "The Last Samurai" the day before classes started.

I loved it..

it is not a romance however - and for those who do not like battles and blood ... please don't go to this movie.

You could compare it to ( and the film plays on the theme) of a Japanese version of Custer's Last Stand... the end is about the same....

It's based on historical fact-- the Seinan Revolt. No hakujin "hero" in it though-- the friend who helped the Japanese rebel leader finish his life "with honor" was also Japanese.

If the movie had been a truely Japanese story, Tom's character also would have met a glorious death. At least they kept the "romantic" parts accurate, unlike such "Japanese" stories like "Sho-gun".... Kaytee "Simplexities" on

Me too, Sooz! I avoid his films, although I did break down and finally saw Minority Report.

Just took DD and a friend to see Stuck on You. Cute, cute movie!

Kaytee -- I thought the same thing -- that the American character played by Cruise didn't follow through on his goal to be "like" his Japanese friend.... he too would have died "with honor" - - of course- that would not have allowed the poignant scene of the sword and the young emperor at the end -- or the disgrace of the rotten counselor... LOL (who also refuses the sword.... and a death of honor...)

Kathy, according to your posts, I thought you *had* more than 12 kids. Just one biological, and one you married...LOL! and one of a furry kind...

Oh, My, God! I *loved* this movie. I had a *very* hard time with recommending it to someone who had 12+ year old kids...I said definitely you have to go first, before you bring your kids, so that you can gauge yourself.

The only thing I can compare it to is the scene of braveheart, where at the end, where Mel Gibson is being ... removed? No "gore", but the full impact is there.

There were a lot of battles, but not a *lot* of visual gore, in my opinion. There were a *LOT* of flashes of cuts, but no real focus on them, more on the battle. There was a lot of focus on the battlefields after.

Again, I *loved* it. Would *NEVER* think of bringing kids under 12 (although they were there), and between 12 & ... 15ish, I would definitely watch the movie first, before I took the kids, to see if the kid was mature enough to watch it. Just my opionion...

Although Ken mildly disagrees with me. He says that you *should*, to get them out of the "war is kewl" mode.

Yeah, you could look at it that way. The fact that there are a zillion kids draped over my furniture is what makes me think I could probably handle a dozen kids of my own. OTOH, most of the time I think I'm a dozen kids all by myself.

SOOO my favorite movie:o) Weird, I was JUST talking about it/him last night. Jack Nicholson has been my favorite actor for a long long time...since I was, uh, 7 years old? When he was The Joker in Batman ;o)

Kyla, Have you seen about Schmidt?

We tried to watch it, but it seemed so depressing that we turned it off.

Ah, but the Japanese version would have had Cruise die-- probably shot in the back while he supported his buddy, and they would have had a last laugh together before the death rattles. The photographer would have been the one to deliver the (probably still bloody) sword, and the dear boy Emperor Meiji would have had a flash of enlightenment... then the rest of the scene played out. The "ending" would have been the boys, now grown, bowing to a double grave of their uncle and his hakujin buddy.... Kaytee "Simplexities" on

I haven't seen that one. I rarely get to watch movies now that my kids are old enough to understand them. The last movie I watched? Thomas and the Magic Railroad, with Alec Baldwin, and Peter (?) Fonda ;o)
