If I "wrote" a screenplay like that, I'd doubtlessly be accused of copywrite violations... or of doing the "same old stuff".... The lower budget type Japanese "historicals" all seem to end that way, and even the Kurasawa quality ones have a tendency for less than happy endings by Western standards. So do modern dramas. Even the comedies seem to have more than a touch of bitterness to them.... If the "hero" doesn't die, he walks away from everybody/thing, alone and with an uncertain but probably difficult future.
