Re: Photo of Mike's latest efforts

Nice work! The blue on blue bumpys are fun.

Thanks! He's really been working like mad to get his technique down. It's helped his attitude no end, too!

I never asked, but are these annealed or just practice beads?

These are not annealed yet, he uses a fiber blanket right now but we're going to turn on the kiln tomorrow and do some practice runs annealing beads. Hopefully some of the ones he's made will survive and be worth using in jewelry or for selling. I think some of them are really good, there's been a quantum leap in his beads over the past weeks.

I know it will take a lot of work before he's really doing his best but right now he's doing great, I think.

I know! I keep playing with them. I want him to get his annealing skills honed, because I want beads I can use. Plus, I have friends nagging me for beads. And there's always that concept of ... gosh... selling them!

OMTP, I like these blues alot! I hope you don't lose too many beads in the anealing process, your DH is doing nice work and it would be sad to lose any beads. I guess there is always that dreaded learning curve tho.

Thanks! I really like his new beads too, I had a time persuading him to try some that were all one color family like that as he likes the ones with white dots. However, I did get some nice chicken out of the freezer and offered to either use it as a 'convincer' or as dinner.

Amazing how these things work!

I print these out and show him all the compliments. Thanks!

That would be wonderful. Can you come over and do it?

Careful! She's going to try to lure you over with that floating B&B line, but then she'll lock you in the SHED until you teach Mike all your glass tricks!

Thanks! I think he's ready at least for eBay. That's of course after we conquer the kiln.

Your turn next, eh?

Thanks, Kalera. Mike knows he has still got a lot to learn and more technique to develop but he's really enjoying it all. I print out tutorials for him and do a lot of searches to find interesting work he can look at for inspiration.

I remember when I bought the books for him, the Corina book, the Cindy Jenkins book and the two-book 'Contemporary Lampwork' set. He spent a lot of time reading through them and absorbing what he could. Then when he started with the torch he came back to the books frequently so he could compare what he felt with the glass to what they said in the books.

He knows it's never going to be an instant thing, being able to do lampwork, or to have any success at it, he's just really pleased he's been able to pick up techniques quickly and use them properly.

On the other hand, I'm ordering him some glass in colors I like! :-D

Oooh, yes!

Especially when I get to wear the results! Um, did that sound right?

Naah, but hey, who cares? I'm on a sugar rush simply from reading the Blair Candy site. I may not calm down for weeks. *sobbing*

There's more but I couldn't take pictures today, I was just too busy playing with my new beads!

*gibber*

Sorry. I'll post some more pics of his stuff soon. I've also come up with an idea of how to use up all his practice beads. We have eight portholes on the boat, that are 15" in diameter, so I'm going to string up the practice beads on wire like a spiderweb and make porthole inserts out of them. We get lots of lovely light shining through the portholes but I don't like people staring through them so this will work nicely and let more light in than a curtain does.

I cannot remember what size the portholes are but if you need an idea for large rings, you can use the rings florists use for wreaths. I have used them for making rondells. Shirley

A genius as always!

They're 15" diameter so I'll probably be able to find a wreath ring that's just the ticket.

Sleep well, I'll write tomorrow when you're up again.

I have a curtain on the window next to the computer now, since the you-know-what is just lurking in view.

That sounds like a prudent precaution. It's hard to type if you can't stop gibbering.

For a while I had a picture of Harrison Ford taped to the other side of the glass, but I couldn't type at all.
