Steel shot tumbling question

MJ tumbles her Hilltribe silver before she sells it to polish it. They have stayed quite nicely.

Linda -- I second the kilfile idea. It has kept me here longer than I wanted to stay on many occasions. It is a wonderful thing.

Cheryl -- I didn't go to your links, but I assume the cases give off fumes. I have a jewlery box at home that is a fabric covered box. I display things on top of it, as well as store things in it. It is the items on top, however, that tarnish 100% faster than anything else I own. I figured it was box giving off glue fumes a long time ago, LOL. But it sure is pretty.

Wait a minute. Someone else behaves badly and youre going to be the one to leave. This makes no sense to me. Well... I hope you change your mind. Let the baddys leave. :-) Diana

Please don't go. I've been eagerly following the tumbling thread -- or at least the productive parts of it, and I have considered all your posts on the subject productive ones.

I don't recall that any of your posts were offensive at all, and I'd hate to see you leave.

You're welcome. Just don't use it on inexpensive silver plate. I hear it does nasty things to cheap stuff. (But I'm assuming you don't venture near the cheap stuff...) Barbara Dream Master

I agree on the killfile issue. It really helps. I have no idea why some people feel the need to be so damn snarky.

I've used steel shot to polish hollow fine (.999) silver beads and very thin and tiny fine silver charms without any problems.

I think your biggest problem will be separating the beads from the shot :)

Just looked at their website and that appears to be their price for regular steel shot, NOT for the stainless steel, which is recommended for tumbling jewelry items. Regular shot rusts, stainless doesn't. I got mine from Rio Grande, listed in their current tool catalog as item #339-388, mixed shot, two pounds for $29.95 plus their usual shipping. I use this in a Lortone 6 pound barrel tumbler for my Hilltribe and other silver and it works perfectly.

Don't forget to have some Dawn dishwashing liquid on hand too... :o)

I find I remember the price I wished I had paid rather than what I really did pay! And for this shot, I wish it had been only 7 bucks a pound. Wishful remembering, right?? And two pounds of it doesn't amount to much in size, don't you think Vicki??

right. on all counts. when i got mine, i was worried about having enough. i've actually got extra. i've got what is about a 2-3 lb tumbler and 1.5 lbs of shot is just right for tumbling the size pieces and the amount i generally have ready at any one time. [copper bracelets, etc].
