There is hope for farsightedness soon. I've read that trials are going on for corrective surgery! I've had myopia for years and now that I'm older so are my eyes and I suffer from the other too. If I had to choose a corrective surgery, I'd opt to correct the farsightedness.

I'd be willing to bet that you could find a professional that would make custom eyewear for you. Ask your eye doctor, Tink.

I'd bet someone out there would be able to grind you a sort of half-bifocal. Distance correction on top, clear glass on the bottom. I had Lasik last year (thank the gods! I love it) but I'm getting farsighted. Before the surgery I was wearing my contacts all the time for distance, and using the stick-on lenses for close viewing (I think I'm on the verge of needing stronger ones, dammit). I don't see why you couldn't do something similar, but reversed (geez, did that make sense? I need more coffee).

I have a pair of special glasses that I wear ONLY at the torch - they are focused for me to be able to see clearly at the torch flame

and that gives me good enough vision to see pretty well what is on the bench in front of me too.

Tell him you want a pair of "fixed focus" lenses and show him exactly the distance you want them focused too (better yet have someone measure from your eyes to the point where you would work in the flame - and give him that distance. This also REALLY cuts back on eye strain for people like us.

(sometimes I even wear them at the computer... LOL)

I have a pair of flip down lenses that are +3 I think. they were about $30. I put them down low so I can see to work close up, but can look over them to get other tools, parts, etc. I don't torch so not sure if this would work for you, but maybe worth a try. You might go to a store that has the cheap reading glasses and try to put them on over your glasses but very low, then hold something at torch distance and see if it is clear. This way you can try different strengths. It is kind of like having magnifying bifocals. Only problem is, work has to be straight in front of you. The optometrist wanted a couple hundred bucks for some flip downs. They can make special bifocals with a stronger Rx, but again $$$$$$. Let me know if you want the name of the company that has the $30 flip downs- I have to ask my friend what it is again, memory goes when u pass 60. Armand

That means its made for farsighted people. Nearsighted people have a "minus" prescription. I think mine is -2.75 in one eye and worse in the other! I take my glasses off to bead too, but then I can't see the tv across the room. Very frustrating, and I'm already in bifocals! It's also for near-sighted people who are older and have lost the ability to focus on very near items. Eg, I can no longer focus on things closer than about 10 inches.

Yes they are magnifying glasses. I am wearing trifocals, my glasses are -4.25 for the primary lens. My trifocals get me down to reading distance fine. These lenses let me get to about 6 inches with clarity- I am looking thru the reading part of the trifocal and the +3 lens. You can get +2, +1.75, whatever you need for your vision and working distance. That is why I suggested trying out reading glasses on top of your regular glasses. As you get older your eyes will change more and more until they may stabilize and actually get a little better for distance as the close up vision fades.

Thanks Kandice and Starlia! I am REALLY enjoying working on vessels these days. As I've said a zillion times here, I really don't "do" jewelry, so that particular vessel is a true rarity. LOL!
