To All My Snowed Up Friends

I'm sitting here with a blanket wrapped around me so that I can type without freezing, LOL. It is 29, no snow, just cold.

Please stay warm. All of you.

I'm here, warm and cozy with my shawl around me. (I think I am the only person under eighty who asked for and received a shawl last Christmas) We've got about 2 feet of snow, and it's still snowing. Bob plowed out a maze of paths in the backyard for Sophie, and is busy plowing our tiny little street.

We live on a dead end street with only a half dozen houses. We are about nine millionth in priority for plowing, so Bob usually snowblows the entire street. He also does all the driveways and walks for the little old ladies that live here. Don't feel too bad for him, too -- he loves every second of it. During storms like this, he comes in for a cup of hot tea, warms up and goes right bck out again.

My poor VW Bug is buried in drifts, and I told Bob not to dig her out, since I can't drive her anyway. Grandpa is the head usher at Church, so Bob got him all dug out in time to make the first morning Mass. We plan to spend the day indoors again, watching movies and goofing around.

Stay safe everyone,

WOW. We'd have to get a whole heckuva lot more than that for them to cancel school!! Our ski resorts all managed to open before Thanksgiving this year, but we are still having what I would consider a very mild winter so far.

Deborah -- I was thinking about you, you won't have to go to Vermont this year, they brought it to you!

I'm in NJ where we have about 15 inches of snow. Stayed in all day Friday and Saturday. Although I was totally paranoid about walking out to the car today to go to work (since I broke my foot on my own sidewalk last year), I managed to conquer that fear (YES!!) and go in. I'm not afraid of much, so this is a new feeling for me and I DO NOT like it. I feel better now though. It was busy at the library, since we were closed for a day and a half, and people were in a good mood, glad to be out. So glad we didn't lose power, as we sometimes do. Thinking of all of you, especially those of you in New England. Patti

Gwen's one of my scrapping buddies. She has sickle cell anemia and is having surgery soon. She has to go to a lower altitude so it will be safer, so she is leaving for Arizona in a few days. I gave her the necklace at dinner the other night so she will have one of Mavis' guardian angels with her.

This is our first major snowstorm since I broke my foot.I'm having a hard time dealing with my fear of falling. Yesterday, I drove to work, got out of the car and got on a patch of black ice and was completely paralyzed with fear. It was NOT fun. I'm not afraid of much, so it was doubly scary. Two women came and helped me - I learned how to walk on black ice, you have to put your entire foot down, flatfooted like a little kid, but it works. Was nervous a lot of the day, but was able to sell some jewelry at work (that always helps), and carried the stuff out by myself afterwards, so I'm getting better (i hope). Patti

I had a problem after I broke my anle on ice. Still have the plate and 7 screws. The most important thing for me was to have the right boots. And RUBBER soles. Real rubber, not crepe or any other material that has different properties as the temperature changes.

My favorite brand is Blondo. Made in Canada, they accommodate the cold here in Alaska, but still makes a reasonably dressy shoe (even in EEE wide).

I also have some rubbersoled shoes by Easy Spirit, and, believe it or not, Cappezio maryjanes with rubber vibram patterned soles.

Just make sure it's really rubber and not something that just looks like rubber.

Tina, Thanks for the suggestions. I've ordered a pair of "fisherman rubber boots" from Oregon, but they aren't here yet. Does Blondo have a website? I've been wearing Merrills and so far, so good. Feel like "little Lulu" (old cartoon for those of you who are too young to remember) walking on the ice. Patti

Hey Patti!

Just a quickie note - I have a pair of - well, I"m not sure what they're called! They are a small frame of metal, with cleats on the bottom. They buckle onto whatever footwear you have on with straps, or rubber. (Hence, you have a boot, or shoe, with cleats...) I have livestock, and am in Ontario, Canada. With water spilling at

40 below in February, you can bet I've taken some interesting spills in my life! (Fractured my tail bone once - hubby sez he's never known anyone who actually 'busted' their own butt!) I do believe I have seen these at Walmart or Kmart - and I have seen them advertised on TV. I've also seen 'Cleats' made from fencing wire - not the wide stuff, but the 1/4 - 1/2 inch grid...cut out a foot shape, add straps or wire them on & voila! Cleats again! (You may look funny wearing em, but everyone else will be too busy trying to keep their balance on the ice to notice!) An idea, anyway... Keep your top end up, huh!?! :) Be well, Janice Randomactofbeadwork *waves to everyone*

Hi, Janice, I think they are called "crampons de glace". That's probably my next step. I know they also have plastic ones which are sold on QVC, I don't know how good they are, but supposedly they are easy to get on and off of shoes. Patti
