Wanted: Full studio w/tools

Pretty well so far. I haven't actually entered very much, and I figure it'll get easier with practice -- but I do notice that the procedures for adding it aren't quite as intuitive as one could wish. The buttons seem to enable and disable and change their labeling in what I consider unusual ways.

I have not actually gotten around to adding any finished pieces (partly because I don't yet have the findings in the parts list), but I've noticed that it seems to be optimized toward the "process" jewelry maker rather than people like me who make mostly one-of-a-kind items. Do you find that to be a problem? Also, I'm wondering how I'm going to integrate my current ID codes into the system, since "piece ID" is not under my control.

LOL my dad is always telling me about some cool thing he got, and then telling me that it'll go to me, at which point I'm like "DAD!" because in what way is it exciting to discuss stuff I'll get when he dies??? He's going to be 76 this year but I'm pretty sure he's got at least another nineteen years left in him. That's what we discussed, anyway, and I'm holding him to it!

Did you end up seeing the post in the WetCanvas Swap Shop???

Yeah - actually it was me. (sheepish grin) After I lurked around WC for awhile I decided I'd better join. It was late, I was signing up and I said to myself, "Hey - I've always liked the name Sophia - not Sophia Loren Sophia, but Sophia, the lady at the Italian Deli Sophia - I have a chance to have an alias, how cool!) 757 is my area code. Sophia757. Little did I know that, unlike EBay, once you choose your name, that is who you will be for life on the WC.

So yes, I saw it. I did.

LOL now I know! Well, glad you're on WetCanvas... I've found that place to be an absolutely priceless resource, though I only really have time to keep up with the technical forum.

This is just a quickie reply- I'm home on half day from William Holland and skimming the group

But: you can bezel set natural stones in PMC after the PMC piece has been fired. We are doing this as a project either Thursday or Friday in class. I'll have more details then :)

oh you mean doing it the old fashioned way - using the PMC piece as a base? Hmnn... we are going to learn how to bezel set a cabochon to a piece of silver sheet (making a ring) in my jewelry class in a couple of weeks...

Pam

This sounds interesting. I wonder how they keep the PMC the right size after firing?

Ah yes, this is how we did it too. We did both "stones" (CZs, but don't try "peridot"; it turns brown) and also glass. The glass needs a different (lower heat and longer heating and cooling) than stones. We didn't do it on sheet PMC, but did used a rolled out sheet of the clay PMC.

this is all very confusing ;-) But I think I get it. You can either set a stone in PMC before you fire it... or you can set a stone on a finished (fired) PMC piece using old fashioned soldering methods - depending on whether the stone will stand the firing process or not.

Pam

That's what I'm hearing. But the silver shrinks in the firing, so I don't know how you would get the setting the right size.

Also, the point of PMC is avoiding the need to use traditional smithing processes. I would think that would be something taught much later. Like after PMC certification, etc.

Quite right, send them to me for... erm... testing purposes...

Doh.
