i'm confuzzled again. if i move to Washington, what do i need to re-setup my business there? state forms? city forms? and is it worth it, if it's only 6-8 months? i somehow doubt my CA resale certificate is going to do me any good.

Here is the link - you can get your license online - I think it's about $25.00 and just takes a few minutes.

Hi, If you aren't planning to move here for more than 6-8 months, there's really no reason to get a resale license for WA. If you plan to keep your CA residency, I think you would keep your resale certificate as well.

That being said, if you do decide to get a WA state business license, you may also have to get a license based on the laws of the city or county you live in. I needed a city issued business license in Seattle, but don't need one here in Whatcom County.

HTH

Best, Deborah

I'm trying to move up there from CA, because it seems *easier* to run a biz. Less red tape. Here in CA, I have to have a county permit, a state permit, and a DBA. And I think I'm supposed to get something federal, too. Can't keep track of it all.

Of course, LIFE in general seems simpler up north, so I might just be perceiving the biz-side of things differently ;o)

Actually here, you need to register your business name and get a UBI number. Depending on your address, you may need a county or city license along with the state license. I had to get one for North Bend, one for Washington, and a DBA as well. Here's a link to start with - there is also an application for a temporary license as well.

And this one is very valuable as well:

Oh, I just saw the other thread you have going...sorry about that....

If it were me, I would wait to see where I was going to stay and then deal with the change of business license. You can still pay any taxes you need owe to the appropriate state.

If you live in WA, you have to collect tax from customers in WA. So, if you keep your CA biz license, and sell to someone in WA while you are here, you can treat it the way you would a art/craft festival and pay the sales tax to WA state. Does this make sense?

So long as the respective states get their dough, I don't think it would be an issue, especially for a short time. But then, I don't like to deal with the government folks unless I have to .....

as always, ymmv

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do!

All the best, Deborah

that could work, yes - thanks!

OK, once again feeling lucky to live in OR...

I sent a $17 check to the state along with a form stating my DBA, and they sent me a piece of paper saying they had filed it. At some point I have to get an actual business license, but I haven't had to yet... I will thids year. Moxley got his employer tax ID online! It's so... simple. It almost makes me feel like Oregon is as backwoods as we have a reputation for!

**smile** when we moved here, i tried to get a business license. evidently, if you don't have a storefront, you don't need one here. [rolling eyes] so every time someone asks me for one, i have to try to explain. and they don't believe me. my resale certificate helps, but . . .

LOL!! Yeah, I know what you mean. Neither the county or the city I live in require a business license for the type of homebased business I have and I don't have employees so a Federal ID isn't necessary either as I can use my SS# for income tax purposes. I have had to convince suppliers more than once that I am a legitimate business though, but usually just reminding them that Oregon doesn't have a sales tax is enough to get by. I remember what we had to go through in Washington when my husband was running his business. Ugh. Too much paperwork and hoops of varying sizes to jump through.

Mj

Sincec we don't have sales tax, we don't have a "resale certificate" per se... and the funny thing is, just being from Oregon seems to be all I need to get wholesale accounts, since our state just doesn't have much by way of "proof" of being a business. I actually just got asked for a copy of my DBA for the first time this week, to set up an account with Pouchmart!

In Alaska we don't have resale licenses. I'm not sure what "a copy of a DBA", but it sounds like the state business license I have. Actually, I have most often heard DBA refer to using your own name as the name of your business. Is that how you are using the term?

Tina

it's a "doing business as" certificate. I learned that in my Business Organizations paralegal class...lol.

In Oregon you're required to register your business name if you are a sole proprietor and are not using your given name as the name of the business (AKA a DBA - doing business as) and also indicate which counties you intend to do business in. It's a fairly painless process and you only have to renew every two years. And now you can find my registration online under the Oregon Licenses, Permits and Registrations: Assumed Business Name listings. Makes it easy to doublecheck whether someone is actually a legitimate business or is flying under the radar.

Mj

No, in Oregon it means you'registered your business name (which can be your own name or not) with the State. It allows you to open business checking accounts under that name, and identifies you as an actual business rather than just someone trying to get a discount with wholesalers.
