Amusing story

I'm currently in California visiting one of my sisters. My dad & I went to the hardware store to get some things and while we were there he started having some problems--we thought it was heat stroke because he was light-headed and had been in the sun. Being 84, the store personnel called the paramedics and they ended up taking him to the hospital. Turns out he probably has diverticulitis or colitis but will be fine. *ANY*way, that's not the humorous part, obviously. When I called my sister and told her they were taking him to the hospital, she kindly thought about bringing my stitching (current project is Fairy Grandmother) for me to do while there. My other sister gathered up my stuff and brought it with. I opened it up and, knowing I needed to start a new color, I studied the pattern for awhile, then reached into my bag for my fabric and it wasn't there! LOL!!! Luckily, I had popped a smaller project, a lightswitch cover, into my bag so I was able to start that. I told her it was great for her to think of bringing it for me.

First of all, glad to hear your dad will be fine!

And the not having the fabric thing sounds like something I'd do all on my own, without help from a very well meaning sibling! LOL

Haha! Something else we have in common! For instance - yesterday I discovered that the Pharmacy had delivered the wrong medication for John, so I put it on top of the telephone/fax machine so I`d remember to sort it out this morning.

This morning we went to the pharmacy to change it and when we arrived, I realised that I`d forgotten to pick them up. Went home, hunted the house out three times over - no tablets! By which time my head ached, my heart was pounding and I just started to search everywhere all over again when something made me remember telling John I`d put them on the machine so I WOULDN`T forget them! Talk about the road to hell being paved with good intentions. I just HATE that - looking for something that you KNOW you put in a safe place!

John`s favourite is putting his specs down in "a safe place". At least he can see them now he`s had his cataracts done - before he needed the specs to see what he was looking for! It`s always me who ends up searching anyway, as he just gets too steamed up.

Organised? What`s that?

Cuz you're too far north of San Diego for a visit! Plus, travelling with another sister and parents makes it a little difficult to get around on my own.

Someday....I will get there someday!

"A safe place" has become a joke in my house. I like to buy gifts when I see them, and put them away to await the proper occasion...but then I often forget that I put something aside, and end up buying another gift instead. I'm known for giving a second gift a week *after* a birthday or Christmas, after it's been found/remembered. DD smiles and nods knowingly and says, "Don't tell me....this was in 'a safe place.' "

Ah, I have a box in a special part of the wardrobe for that! I have found that it`s best not to wrap them, though - I NEVER remember what`s in them and have to unwrap them to see. Of course I could put labels on them! Duh!

In one apartment, we had a nice hallway closet with shelves, one of which was designated the Gift Shelf. Not only the things that I bought specifically for someone, but also things I spotted and thought "that would be a nice emergency gift."

Now I use a drawer in the guest room. The drawer above it is empty, so when I find something larger, it can have a drawer of its own till Christmas.

But you'd have to be organized to do that! ROFL

Coming full circle I think!

Well, if you have kids you can't be as obvious as having a designated gift shelf. By definition, it's not "a safe place" unless it's where nobody would think to look, LOL!

You mean in the freezer in a package marked 'Mixed Lima Beans and Brussel Sprouts" ??

Of course in my household my husband might see that and take it as a challenge to make something with it.... BLEAGH!!!

Some days, all I really want is a spot that is MINE - to leave as I want to leave it. And some space somewhere to store things like my books, my GS stuff, half done crafts etc!

Oh I so agree with you, Cheryl. Wouldn't you think that with just the two of us living in a 4 bedroom house I could have that?

You'd think that, but I happen to know that grandchildren are frequently at your house. LOL

Sadly, I must decide which books go to the library again. My cookbook collection among them..... Sigh - I seem to be the only one that can move things to another location outside the house!

We`ve been having a sort out and taking books that we KNOW we won`t read any more to the British Heart Foundation Charity Shop. I staggered in there only yesterday with FAR too heavy a bag of books, thinking that it wasn`t REALLY the place to collapse with heart failure!!!

It`s amazing how many books you just keep, though, just because you enjoyed them when you read them - yet never, ever read again, good as they are!

I had to count the number of books I lost to the fire.

Over 300 paperbacks, over 100 trade size paperbacks, 100 or so hardbound books...and those were just the ones in the bedroom!

I'd held onto them for years, although I knew I'd never actually read most of them again!

Caryn (who doesn't recommend a fire as a way to declutter, but it was highly effective nonetheless! LOL)

Other than my professional library, which is all in my home office, the only books I keep in the house are ones I haven't read yet. There are far, far too many of those. I keep trying to impose a moratorium on bringing books into the house, but then I'll see something I just can't resist. *sigh*

Books are in three classes - the ones I'll never get rid of that I'll re-read as "comfort reads", books that I enjoyed enough to share with friends and those that come in and go right to the library bag after reading.

But, there are my garden and stitching reference books, along with my cookbooks, that are "collections" that I just can't figure out what to do about. Sigh
