Blackwork

Hi to everyone - I used to be here a lot - now I only have access through Google and pop in from time to time to catch up on things. So now I'm here to ask for help.

I am making a chessboard. I have taken the pattern for the board and done the outlines, trims and corners - These are all metallic - silver and gold, Dragons on each side and little bitty dragons in the corners, with a lattice like pattern filling in.

Now, in the style of Queen Besse's (not sure on the spelling) chessboard, I am filling in the black and white squares with different patters of blackwork. I have Lynne Skinner's 100 Blackwork patterns, but some have odd numbers of squares and I need even numbers (my squares are 20 x 20) My intent is to work the white squares each in a different pattern and then do the same going the opposite direction in black - so I need a total of 32 patterns. I've gotten about 10-12 done so far and looks like there's another 10 or so in the book I can use, but I'm still coming up short.

I've not been very successful in finding patterns on line (of the freebie variety) and so am asking if anyone has any sources, references or pointers for helping me find some that will work. I didn't really want to buy another book of 100 patterns, but if I can't find anything else, that may be how I have to go.

Any help will be appreciated.

Did you check your library? Mine has several blackwork books available for checkout - maybe you can find something there.

retires them after a few months, so it's worth going back. If youjoin her forums and/or mailing list, you have access to some mroe, too. There's a whole thing about ideas for them, too. I love the sound of your chessboard, btw! Are you going to mount it in some sort of frame when you're done?
