It's one of the "mythical birds & beasts" from a Dover book of blackwork patterns, it looks to me like a cross between a peacock and a phoenix. The original was part of page containing several different "creatures" and quite tiny so I scanned and enlarged the pattern for Maureen. Bruce

I know - you should create a guardian angel of stitching that will ward off counting errors and frogging.
