BooHoo ACMoore

We were just informed that the new A.C.Moore store that we've been looking forward to in our area is NOT opening. Apparently they are in some financial difficulty (who isn't) and they're closing another store in south Florida and not opening the St. Lucie West location at this time.

That leaves us with Michaels and their very limited needlework department and the even more limited area in JoAnn's. I feel like crying.

Oh don't, not over a store, we have the net lol

Why not--isn't it better to cry over something so trivial and not have a serious enough care to cry over.

There is NOTHING in Brooklyn - a city (so to speak) of 2.5 plus million people. No Michaels, no JoAnns, no A.C. Moore, no Hobby Lobby. There was a tiny chain called Fabric Bonanza but it closed about 6 years ago. There was one Rag Shop store and it closed along with all the others either this year or last year.

We're very lucky here. Although there are fewer than 400 people on the island a new shop is opening on 28 June. And its only a few yards from our house. See Bruce

All the craft stores are suffering in my area. At the morning meeting, we find out just how much behind plan the store and framing are.

Prepare to spend money ! You're lucky, so is Lucille really, our nearest LNS is a three and a half hour drive away. Our Guild is lucky in that somebody regularly has to go to Moncton so we can order and she picks it up.

As far as I recall, there never was any needlework shop in Brooklyn. There were shops that sold yarn for knitting, but none for needlework.

And everyone knows, Brooklyn rocks and Florida doesn't.

Well to be fair there are a couple of needlepoint shops in Brooklyn though nothing spectacular. There are a lot of big box stores opening up - Ikea last week, a new Target last month (we have 3 now and another one coming), so perhaps a large chain craft store will come too.

Shall we sing my alma mater's, Brooklyn College, song? B is for the B in Brooklyn College, R is ...

Sliding towards topical, when my sister lived in Brooklyn, she did a lot of hand painted canvases using perle cottons and basketweave/tent stitching. I don't have a clue where she got her stuff or if she chose to use boring threads and stitches on purpose.

I'm very lucky to have Michaels, AC Moore, Joann's, and Hobby Lobby not more than 5 minutes away. The closest needlework store is owned and staffed by wonderful people but it s u cks (can I say that here?) They seem to specialize in XS reproduction samplers although they do have a smattering of punch needle projects

I was looking at this site and noticed, "The first resident, in 1911, was William Smith Inkster, " We have a town named Inkster not too far from here. I wonder if there's any relation?

I also saw that Stronsay is 7 miles long and 6 miles wide. I think I'd go nuts living on an island where distances are so limited! :) I'm used to wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide open spaces. In fact, your island is almost the same size as our city of Grand Forks, which is about 6 miles long and 4 miles wide! I drive 11 miles (one way) to work every day. There's one woman who works here who drives about 20.

We have one of those out this way, too.

I went with a shopping list (the new MLI and threads to make her). No MLI of any kind (not even her more sampler-type stuff). Not a single sparkly thread in the whole store. If you weren't into reproduction samplers, forget it.

Wonderful lady, offered to special-order whatever I wanted, but that would have necessitated a second long drive to get there to pick them up, and at that time, I had a LNS 10 minutes from home where I knew I could get everything on my list.

Not to say that I walked out of there empty-handed, but I didn't (couldn't) buy a single thing on my list. It was all impulse purchases.

If you live in Canada then there may well be an Inkster connection. See . In 1799, of the 530 men working in the Hudson's Bay Company post in North America, 416 were from Orkney. I'm not a native Orcadian, we moved up here four years ago when I retired. Although we've lived in various parts of the UK and both of us have worked abroad for several years we don't find the limited distances disadvantageous; however, the lack of trees is noticeable. These days I find that I don't drive very much particularly when the price of petrol is 1.38 GBP per litre (10.40 USD per US gallon) and my car does about 5 km per litre

We just had a new AC Moore open in the neighborhood within the past month -- right across the street from a Michael's. Will *both* survive? I doubt it. What's the point of opening a redundant store so close by?

I went into the AC Moore for the first time last week, and it's exactly the same as the Michael's except a little more "open/airy" feeling (Michael's always feels so cluttered). And cleaner - but that could be because it's new and just hasn't developed a "patina" yet, LOL!

Locally both are making it - for now. While there is overlap, there does seem to be some major differences in who shops where.

Armed with coupons, I shop them all!

Since I started to use beads to embellish, not for jewelery, I've noticed major shifts. Price increases are a given but it's robbery for little acrylic flowers that once cost $0.50/package to be bundled with 2 other packages and sold for $3.99. Most have phased out assortments of the really cheap acrylic beads except for large pony beads

Hmmm - we have both here - and a plethora of LNS - so are completely spoiled. Indeed, the shop (where I work) owner ordered in a bunch of stitch 'n zip kits for "all in one" projects - at the behest of a customer that had one, besides our own Donna. Of course, Donna pointed out to me (who was not heralding the aqcuisition of all these relatively inexpensive kits) "why are you guys getting those when AC Moore or Michaels have them? Duh - good question - as most of us would use a coupon and buy it at the craft shop. Particularly when we're supposed to be carrying all that lovely special and unique stuff the box/craft shops don't. (No, not Dimensions kits, but). OTOH, we bought some lovely kits from a NZ company and some really quirky little artsy ones - the name of the artist has whished out of my mind - I think Julie Putney - but I could be wrong.

Anyhow, we're spoiled, I know it, and hence feel for those not so fortunate, and try to be nice in reminding some of our customers who've lived in a place like DC always - with lots of stitching resources.

Anyhow - the AC Moore is slightly nearer to where we live now, and I like it a bit better. It smells less of eucalyptis and candles or stuff. But, honestly, I don't buy much in either - unless it's a definite use a coupon day. And there is actually a good artist's supply with drafting stuff shop in the same strip center as one of the better Michaels - not far from the LNS (though about 15 mi from home). Plus - it's the artist's supply that I like to use, anyhow.

:Woul you be speaking of the one they were GOING to put up in the CoralSprings/Margate area?? I have been looking so forward to that storemyself as I do not want to drive all the way to Fed. Hwy. or Davie whichis to long of a drive and that would of been the ideal spot for it.. Ilooked online over three weeks ago and seen that the (coming soon) signwas gone. So today in my travels went by and they took down the sign andthey are putting in a Joanns now YUCK! I want Cricut stuff I wantCuttlebug stuff and scrapbooking stuff and Joanns just does not have thevast quanity that ACMOORE does.. err I did see this in the businesssection today also>>>>> Retailer A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts Inc. said Monday it will close seven to10 stores this year. A.C. Moore (NASDAQ:ACMR) said it will cost $7 million to $9 million to settle lease obligations, severance pay and other expenses regarding the closings.

The company did not specify which stores would be closed, but indicated that the stores were not achieving "desired operating efficiencies."

Its conclusion was based on a previously announced review of its real estate portfolio.

At the same time it is closing underperforming stores, A.C. Moore plans to open eight to 12 new stores. In some cases, the locations may be a relocation of a current store, when and where it is practical, the company said.

A.C. Moore also said it is seeking state and local approval to expand its distribution center in Berlin, N.J. If the expansion goes through, it will forego construction of a second distribution center.

SO what gives. They are closing stores and stores that have yet to even open but still opening more...AHHHH I think their biggest prob. is also is that they do not do enough advertising. I just started getting flyers in our paper and never knew about ACMOORE till a friend of mine in ND wanted a cricut and asked if I would go get her the one that was on sale and that is when I found out about them. This stinks... ugh.

I read somewhere that the CEO left in early June and that seems to be when they decided not to build.

I do have a Michaels within driving distance but was happy because this was just a few blocks away.

Oh Well !!!
