Grrrr

So much for my new computer. I was using it 4:15 yesterday and it was working fine. When I went back at 5, it had turned itself off and I couldn't get it to turn back on.

The consensus of geeks available to me by e-mail is that there's something wrong with the power supply, and I was probably operating on battery at 4:15 and didn't realize it; by 5, the battery was used up.

Fortunately, it's still in warranty, so I can take it back to the store and have it worked on (or replaced) for free. Unfortunately, I hadn't backed up in the last couple weeks, so lost access to a couple projects in process. Because the new one doesn't have a floppy drive, I can't use my old method of having WordPerfect save to floppy every 5 minutes. Hadn't yet figured out whether I can have it auto-save to the CD drive every 5 minutes.

Sympathies. Mine seems to be a bit pooched and one of the young fellows from the local group is coming by tomorrow to take a look and possibly teach me the whatevers about reformatting. Even if the reformatting is not nice, he is :)

Karen C - California had some very interesting things to say about Grrrr:

Possible, especially with rewriteable CDs. I think. Check with my pet ulcer on this one.

Once you get the power supply fixed, you should still be able to get at your HD.

Hey, wait a minute! We've got an excess laptop over here that lacks usable HD but is otherwise fine. We could probably transplant your existing hard drive at least long enough to get your stuff back!
