I'm HOME -- Firehouse Angel Stuff

Hi Guys, I'M HOME -- HOORAY :-). Had a great time with DD, got the SMDGD just about potty trained and kicked some serious butt with Steven the DSonIL :-). Anyway, it's time to get back to business with the Angel. One of us (I'm not sure if she wants her name mentioned) has been busily doing research and e-mailing people at the FDNY and she has found someone to help us coordinate the presentation. The woman's name is Suzanne Sebert and I got an e-mail from her today. She says that having the piece in the FDNY HQ isn't a good idea. Security is **VERY** tight there and not many people are allowed into the building unless they work there so there really wouldn't be a lot of people who would get to see and appreciate the Angel and what she symbolizes. Suzanne felt a better place for the Angel would be the headquarters of the 12th Battalion which covers part of Manhattan. Since she is there and part of the FDNY, I told her that we would trust her judgment on placement of the Angel. Suzanne said that we would need to have the presentation at sometime other than the week of 9/11 as there is no time available. I told her that we had discussed this and most felt it would be best to have the piece presented in late August. Hopefully, this will be acceptable to our two presentation volunteers. So -- I do remember that Linda T. (who stitched on the piece)is one of the volunteers but I can't find the @(%*%^& piece of paper I wrote the other persons name on. Will you PLEASE e-mail me again so I can get things settled with both of you? I need to get the frame choice nailed down ASAP. IIRC, we now have about $475.00 in the framing fund. This means we have about $400.00 to use for framing because I am sure I will need at least $75.00 for shipping costs. I've gotten a few e-mails from people about what they like and there have been a few posts, too. It seems that those who have posted prefer either the Designs by Susan frame (cost of $431.23) or the smaller frame from Michael's (cost of $208.12). There's a HUGE difference in the two prices!! If we use the Designs by Susan frame option, I will put in the additional money needed. If we decide on the Michael's frame, I think we should donate the left over money to the FDNY for one of their charities. What do the rest of you think? We need to make a decision ASAP and I need to know what the majority wants me to do, OK? I might have my needlework friends go with me to both Susan's and Michael's and look at the two options on the same day. This way we will see the options again AND on the same day and it will make it easier to decide if one is really better than the other. Of course, if a bunch of you think it would be better to use the Michaels' option and then give the FDNY a check for $200.00+ along with the Angel, that's good too :-). So, I think we need to decide if we want to spend all the $$ on framing or about half the $$ on framing and donate the other half to the FDNY? I think we need to hear from ALL of you who are interested, not just those who stitched on the piece and donated money for the framing. And PLEASE, if you want to be critical of the project, etc., that's fine but start another thread, OK? Let's try and keep this thread for determining which framing option we want to use. So -- what's it gonna be? I need to know by the end of the month OK?? Thanks bunches & CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I vote for the Michael's frame and donating the extra $$. I like the Michael's frame, and personally I'm not sure I could justify spending the higher amount when the extra $$ could go to a good cause.

I'll let the rest of you decide . . . though I agree with Elizabeth that I liked the color better on the "Susan" frame.

But I'll bring this up to remind you: What about the plaque?

I like the idea of using the less expensive Michael's frame, but I too would like to see the mat in a lighter color.

I agree. Can you get a pic of the Michael's frame with mats the colors in Susan's? Michael's has *got* to have those same colors, I would think....

And, yes, what about the plaque? Should I get that made up and did you mention it to the framers? I'm almost *positive* it will have to go in a cutout in the matting.

There does *not* have to be a cut out for this very thing brass plaque. Absolutely not necessary at all. I'm looking at a framed piece with one. So, I know it's not necessary.

Tia Mary, please PLEASE come visit! DD will be four this fall and still has no inclination to use the potty at home. She will sometimes at school or at Grandma's but school is done for summer and Grandma lives ten hours away.

Aunt Karen will take care of that. I potty-trained DNiece in one day, and I wasn't even there.

For her 4th birthday, I gave her panties too small to fit over the diapers, with her favorite cartoon character on them.

Next morning, she demanded to wear her new panties, and was told No. She'd get them dirty and then they'd have to be thrown away. She promised she wouldn't get them dirty. She went potty 147 times that day, went through a couple rolls of TP, but Mickey did not get either wet or poopy. She made sure of it because she did not want her beloved Mickey thrown out.

Problem solved.

I did the same thing to the SMDGD. I bought her Princess panties, Elmo panties and SpongeBob panties and she knows she can't wear any of them until she goes to the potty ALL the time. This kid goes potty right after her bath and then has about 15 or 20 minutes of fun time before bed. She wakes us with a dry pull-up every night. She has been urinating in the potty fairly consistently for several months and she just last week started going poop in the potty. Problem with her is that she does NOT want to go potty on a "grown-up" sized toilet. Her daycare has kid sized toilets and she would use them but NO WAY will she go on a big potty even with the folding toilet seat DD has that makes the toilet seat suitable for kids. STUBBORN is all I can say about this kid!!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I haven't forgotten about the plaque -- I'm just not sure where it will go. Both Susan and Michael's said they would NOT put the plaque in. I could probably talk Susan into doing it but trying to get Michael's to do something that is not "rote" or run of the mill is like pulling eye teeth. Joan, PLEASE, order the plaque, OK? When you do, ask them if they would be able to drill little holes in the top corners so that it could be hung from the bottom of the frame IF that's what we have to do. Once we decide on the frame, I will talk to the framer about it and see if I can browbeat the person into putting it on the mat. Personally, I prefer the look of having the plaque mounted to the inner mat and then having a cutout in the top mat to accommodate the plaque. I'm sure the plaque would have to be attached with some sort of double stick tape. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Yeah -- you'd *think* they would have the same coors but they don't! The bottom mat is the same sort of pale yellowy cream but there was absolutely NOTHING that was in the taupe range that was anywhere close to what we chose at Susan's! That's the only reason we went with the colored top mat. As for the concerns of it being to dark, it's not really, that's just the way it looks from the angle I had to take the photo. I mean, it IS darker than the bottom mat but it's just a bit darker than the top mat in the Susan option. The main difference is that the Susan top mat is suede and a sort of rosy-taupe and the Michael's top mat is a mottled lilacy-taupe. If anyone is near a Michael's and is interested, that top mat is called Lilac Mist and is #B-4430. No idea what the top mat is for the susan frame -- her estimate does not include that info. I like the framing by Susan option much better and don't mind contributing extra (and have emailed Tia Mary off list). One thing I would like to say is maybe hold off on drilling the holes in the plaque until we know how it's to be attached. I would hate to have the framer agree to put it on the mat and then be stuck with holes in it! Just my $0.02 Heather

Tia Mary, I leave it to you to decide on the frame and the colors, since none of us has seen the real ones and discussion over colors could go on until the end of time. Since we all have varying opinions, I think at this point we should leave it to your good judgment. However, I do have a couple of other thoughts.

I like your idea of using the less expensive frame and giving the balance of the money to the Fire Department.

I still would not care to see a plaque on the frame because I think it would detract from the overall beauty of work itself. If you feel an explanation or acknowledgment is appropriate, I suggest a small, simple plaque to go on the wall beneath the framed Angel.

But whatever you decide, I offer my gratitude to you for taking on the thankless job of pulling this all together.

I agree on this. The other option is to get it matted at one place and framed at the other. More hassle but maybe the best solution????

I will get estimates on both one to go in/on the frame and as a separate plaque until it's decided on how it's to be done.

Thanks Joan. From e-mails and posts here, it's starting to look like more people prefer the Susan framing option. I'll have to go by her shop and talk to her about the plaque and let you know ASAP. I'll just tell her that the group wants a plaque and the majority prefer to see it mounted on the mat. I think for $400+ dollars, she'll agree to putting the plaque on the mat! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I'm just now cataloging a book on just this! :) It's by Mo Willems and is called Time to pee! for those aged 2-4. It was published in 2003. Here's another: Robert N. Munsch, I have to go! pub'd 1987 and another by Julie Markes Where's the poop? from 2004. Your library should have them.

Don't know if it will help, but it couldn't hurt! Good luck.
