Medici Tapestry

I found this article about restoring a Medici tapestry in The New York Times today and found it very interesting.

The article begins with:

"Restoring Medici Splendor, One Stitch at a Time By KATHRYN SHATTUCK Published: November 1, 2005 The scene was less fine art than sweatshop, the kind of backbreaking labor that would have been common four centuries ago. In the textile conservation department of the Metropolitan Museum one day last week, four women hunched over "The Gathering of Manna," a rare Medici tapestry with a papal lineage that will be unveiled tomorrow in the Italian Renaissance gallery.

Now here's my question? How many of you would have loved to be in on this project?

Count me in!

I have always been in awe of these massive tapestries. The work that went into creating then in the first place is just staggering.

In Mechlen , Belgium , The Royal Manufacturers DE WIT, are collecting back and restoring their tapesteries of 5 centuries. They have a workshop which isn`t open to all , The factory /Gallery is open to the public only one day a week. And the Repairing room is visited so that you can`t see too much, you get an Over look of the room, you are kept far enoughso you can seenames or tags of any thing They don`t accept `anyone ` to work on restoration. De wit is situtaed in the Tongrelo Abbey refuge. mirjam

The 4 women referred to in the original description were the four stitchers who are restoring the tapestry. But there is no reason a Renaissance tapestry would not have depicted women--and if you check the link given, this one did. Dawne

This morning we had (I love to use this word) a skiff of snow. (Not a small rowboat, but just those whispy bits that cling to the edges of lawns and even roads). Dawne

I still have roses and clematis coming out! It`s crazy in November. I was out in pants and tee-shirt yesterday, but you have to change into something a bit warmer for the evening. I get fed up with having to change clothes every few hours to suit the temperature at the time!

I did hear that someone had discovered SNOWDROPS in flower somewhere not far from here!

We have crepe myrtles and tulip trees blooming again here in Louisiana. It gets chilly, then it gets warm, and repeats the cycle -- more this year than in the past, it seems. Today it was 82 degrees.

I was out in shorts today and felt a little on the warm side. It is still in the mid-60s even though it is about two hours after sunset. I can remember years when the snow would be flying by now.
