Message error

Why am I getting this message every time I try to read this newsgroup??? I have a new Dell computer and I know I am not low on memory or disc space.

What is the error message? Have you tried compacting your folders? The following is information I have seen on the microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress newsgroup, and may help.

To compact all your folders, Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open(the little envelope with blue arrows.).

Then: Go to File>Work Offline in the menu (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). Next: File>Folder>Compact all folders. Don't touch ANYTHING until the compacting is completed.

At this point, my suggestion is that you restart your computer. Hopefully this will solve your problem. If not, perhaps unsubbing from the NG, restarting computer, and re-subbing could help.

As Brenda pointed out, you may have old messages as well. For myself, I used a newsgroup rule to delete messages over a certain number of days old at one point, and ran it manually, as I was unable to delete the messages in any other manner(possibly a glitch in my machine or my OE6 on XP Home, SP1, not sure which). Actually, I never have been able to delete downloaded messages in my OE, without unsubbing and resubbing. Any suggestions, Brenda? Never said I was an expert, just a fountain of semi-useful information at times. ;-)

Which brings up the idea that there is a free version of Agent Forte - I believe the only difference between it and the paid one is that one cannot send email, nor killfile persons.

You can find it at

- Ruby Scott told me for about four years to use it, now I do lol I changed after Netscape 7 came out and gave me grief. I loathe Outhouse Express, more problems with that than Netscape.

Thanks, Lucretia, have saved the addy and will keep it in mind. For now, as long as OE is working as it always has for me, I will probably just keep it. If things disintegrate, that may be the next route I take.

Thanks for the help.

I unsubscribed from the newsgroup and resubscribed and it seems to be working ok now. Time will tell.

By the way I am a CS junkie and I lurk in this newsgroup every day. cslady

How odd - I`ve nevr had any trouble with OE at all - ever! Had trouble with the server from time to time, but never with OE.

In OE, go to the top of the screen and click on Tools/options/ Maintenance/ clean up now..tell maintenance what you want deleted, compacted or whatever..

Hi, Alice, Thanks for the pointer, I had forgotten about that section. I was really hoping there would be an easy way to ignore and delete a *specific* message (like certain posts that occasionally appear that no one wants), without writing a rule every time one pops up, and without turning off the preview pane.

In OE Help, do a search on "ignore" for a description of how to ignore a conversation to see if that is what you want to do.
